Neil Gaiman

Finally a fully satisfying novel by Neil Gaiman. The writing of Anansi Boys is top-notch and the mix of comedy and horror works wonders. This novel is perfectly wrapped up and masterfully delivered. While at first sight this is a light and comic novel, it goes very deep on the philosophical level with interesting and subtle views on family, parent-children relationships and the challenge of growing up. Perhaps Gaiman’s best novel.

As most of Gaiman’s novels, American Gods emulates from a great concept but lacks in his creator’s execution. The idea of portraying the fight of old vs. new gods to control the soul of America is a fantastic way to reflect on American (lack of) culture. However Gaiman does not have the skill to build a long novel and the story lacks cohesiveness and epicness. Some excellent scenes alternate with poorly written ones. As often with Gaiman, the excess of symbolism does not make up for the lack of a powerful and well-written story. American Gods remains an interesting novel, but it could have been much more.

L’intention est jolie, avec des dessins, c’est sympa. Le sous-titre « Parce que votre imagination peut changer le monde » est tonique… En plus c’est court (très court, peut-être trop court d’ailleurs) et il y avait pas mal pour réussir…

Mais parfois, ça ne croche pas vraiment.

Et franchement, même si le chapitre sur les bibliothèques m’a ravi… Pourquoi diable Chris Riddell doit-il les dessiner avec des chignons ? Hein ? Depuis quand n’est-il pas entré dans une bibliothèque ? Où est-ce encore ainsi en Angleterre ?
