Esther Markstrom and her artist mother have always been proud of their ancestor, painter Francisco Vella. They even run a small museum and gallery dedicated to raising awareness of his scandalously underappreciated work. But when Esther reconnects with her former art history professor, she finds her once-solid family history on shaky ground as questions arise about Vella's greatest work--a portrait entitled The Lady with the Dark Hair.
In 1879, Catalan orphan-turned-fugitive Viviana Torrens has found sanctuary serving in the home of an aging artist in Southern France. It is in his studio that she meets Francisco Vella, a Gibraltarian merchant who sells artists' pigments. When her past catches up to her, she is compelled to pose as Vella's sister and join him on his travels or be deported back to Spain to stand trial. Along the way she will discover that the many parts she has been playing in order to hide her identity have far-reaching implications she never could have foreseen.
This dual-timeline story from award-winning author Erin Bartels takes readers from the sleepy Midwest to the sultry Mediterranean on a relentless search for truth, identity, and the freedom to follow one's dreams.

A former Wall Street veteran, quarantined by the coronavirus, becomes consumed with madness—or the fulfillment of his own mythic fate; from author, actor, and musician David Duchovny. Now in paperback and featuring a brand-new short story, "The Scare Owl."
The Reservoir follows an unexceptional man in an exceptional time. We see our present-day pandemic world and New York City through the eyes of a former Wall Street veteran, Ridley, as he looks back upon his life in his enforced quarantine solitude, wondering what it all means and who he really is.
Sitting and brooding night after night, gazing out his huge picture window high above the Central Park Reservoir, Ridley spots a flashing light in an apartment across the park as if a lonely quarantined person is signaling him in Morse code. His determination to find out who this mystery woman is leads him on an epic quest that will ultimately tempt him with either delusional madness or the fulfillment of his own mythic fate.
Is he a dying man going mad or an everyman metamorphosing into a hero? Or both? We accompany Ridley as he leaves the safety of his apartment window to save the Fifth Avenue femme fatale and descends into a dangerous, increasingly surreal world of global conspiracies, madness, and sickness of this viral time. As Ridley’s actions grow more and more uncharacteristic, he realizes the key to all the mysteries of now, and even all of history, seem to lie deep beneath the freezing waters of the reservoir.
The Reservoir is a twisted rom-com for our distanced time, when the merest touch could kill and conspiracy theories propagate like viruses—a contemporary union of Death in Venice, Rear Window, and The Plague.
“A lonely ex-financier stuck in his apartment during the Covid-19 pandemic becomes obsessed with the Central Park Reservoir and slowly goes mad.”—New York Times Book Review
“[Duchovny’s] novella The Reservoir, set in New York City, probes how pandemic isolation has changed us.”—Boston Globe

Best-selling author Jennifer Belle (High Maintenance, Going Down) unleashes her first new novel in over ten years.
It’s the summer of 1982 and fourteen-year-old Swanna Swain is the only one left at camp. The place is a ghost town by the time her mother Val finally shows up six hours late—stoned and radiant—in a Ford pickup driven by Borislav, her new young Russian lover. Assuming she is headed home to her air-conditioned Upper West Side apartment, Swanna and her lovable younger brother Madding are instead dragged to Vermont— to an artist colony where kids are not welcome and they are forced to sleep in the back of the truck, while Val is cozy inside the house with the Russian.
Then Swanna meets Dennis, a handsome married father of two, at a bowling alley, and, knowing a thing or two about seduction from Judy Blume, her best friend at camp, and her own parents’ many affairs, she sets out to convince Dennis to help her. But love seldom obeys rules, and even a tough, smart city girl like Swanna might not be able to handle falling in love. Best-selling novelist Jennifer Belle returns with a kind of inverse Lolita that explores adolescent desire from the girl’s point of view. In turns hilarious and wildly shocking, Swanna in Love will keep your feathers ruffled and the pages gliding by.

A historically accurate work of fiction.
During the turbulent late 1950s (Eisenhower Era), the New Sentinels are called upon to reveal a hidden plot (Operation Ajax) to topple Iran's Parliamentary Government, reinstate the exiled Shah, and take over Iran's oil industry, the fourth-largest in the world.
WHAT IS ONE'S DUTY TO THE GREATER GOOD?
If you're born into the power, resources, and ability to fight evil in the world, is it your responsibility to do so?
The easy answer seems to be, yes... but what if you knew it would cost you your family? If you knew you would always live in fear? If it would more likely cost you your life?
This is the central thematic question at the heart of Sentinels interwoven into the subtext throughout the series.
Our heros will struggle with their call to duty, have their resolve galvanized, and face uncertainty in their choices, ultimately finding an answer to this question in the end.
***
The Sentinels is a historical fiction drama mixing suspense, romance, and political intrigue, all done with a touch of humor. The elegant, globe-trotting, and history spanning production visuals will captivate the audience while they get hooked into the story by the complex interpersonal conflicts and biting humor between the characters. Imagine the HBO series 'Succession' but with characters you root for because at their core they are good people you want to see succeed.
Gordon Zuckerman's ongoing historical fiction series, The Sentinels, delves into an alternate version of history where influential individuals strive to prevent wars instead of initiating them.

A Lesson in Vengeance meets The Taking of Jake Livingston in this page-turning YA horror/fantasy set in dark academia about a queer Black teen who discovers the sinister history of his boarding school and the corrupt powers behind it all.
Regent Academy has a long and storied history in Winslow, Vermont, as does the forest that surrounds it. The school is known for molding teens into leaders, but its history is far more nefarious.
Seventeen-year-old Douglas Jones wants nothing to do with Regent's king-making; he's just trying to survive. But then a student is murdered and, for some reason, by the next day no one remembers him having ever existed, except for Douglas and the groundskeeper's son, Everett Everley. In his determination to uncover the truth, Douglas awakens a horror hidden within the forest, unearthing secrets that have been buried for centuries. A vengeful creature wants blood as payment for a debt more than 300 years in the making--or it will swallow all of Winslow in darkness.
And for the first time in his life, Douglas might have a chance to grasp the one thing he's always felt was missing: power. But if he's not careful, he will find out that power has a tendency to corrupt absolutely everything.
A high-octane mystery of murder and magic for fans of Ace of Spades, House of Hollow, and Get Out!

Jenny Smith, a young journalist, secures a career-making interview with a famous but reclusive author, AJ Kenton. Jenny’s time with Mr. Kenton, however, is not spent in her asking questions but in his telling one last story.
During three afternoons, Kenton describes a pivotal point in his life. As a twelve year old, he went door to door in his neighborhood and sold packets of flower seeds. His goal was to earn a prize from the seed company’s catalog. His memories reveal the hidden struggles of middle-class life in the early 1960s, a time that many people living today picture as ideal. When neighbors invite AJ into their homes, they also invite him into their private worlds of successes, failures, and dreams. At the same time, AJ discovers his true talents, and he faces the dysfunction that may tear his family apart.
By experiencing an intimate look at a cross-section of American life from the past, Jenny realizes how our present American life is painfully similar. Ultimately, she must decide whether to unmask harsh realities or to maintain pleasant illusions.

If you want to understand the Black experience in the US, you have to understand hip-hop.
James Baldwin, in his famous talk "The Struggle for the Artist's Integrity," suggests that "the poets (by which I mean all artists) are finally the only people who know the truth about us." And to understand the truth about the history of Black peoples in America, argues Lenny Duncan, we must look to the modern Black poet: the hip-hop artist.
In Psalms of My People, artist, scholar, and activist Lenny Duncan treats the work of hip-hop artists from the last several decades--from N.W.A, Tupac, and Biggie to Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, and Kendrick Lamar--like sacred scripture. Their songs and lyrics are given full exegetical treatment--a critical and contextual interpretation of text--and are beautifully illustrated, with a blend of ancient and modern art styles illuminating every page.
All the while, Duncan traces the history of hip-hop, revealing it as a conduit to tell the modern story of Black liberation in this country, following the bloody trail from the end of the Civil Rights Era through the day George Floyd was sacrificed on the streets of America.
"Who else but the hip-hop artist," asks Duncan, "has embodied the cries, pain, and secret concrete ? Whose art? Our art. Whose story is written in the book of life with crimson lines dipped in a well that is 400+ years deep? Whose story? Our story. For whom does God bring down empires? Us."

It is said we get our looks from our parents—hair color, eye color, height. But can you inherit the fishing gene?
If Sue Daignault is any proof, the answer is a resounding yes! Spending summer childhoods with her family on Cape Cod, Sue and her siblings learned to surfcast for striped bass. She developed a love for fishing that has taken her around the world.
In A Full Net, Daignault tells the story of how she came to be an enthusiastic and gifted angler, sharing triumphs (such as 150-pound halibut she caught while serving on a Coast Guard cutter in Alaska) and disappointments (we're looking at you, triggerfish). She shares her knowledge and experience with both the reader and the many people in her book, who range from professional guides to newbies. Through it all shines her love for the waters of the world and respect and admiration for the creatures who call them home.

A debut chapbook from a Vermont poet!
Through interactions with and the examination of the natural world, poems in Mountain Offerings move from a youthful voice to a more experienced one, showing a coming-of-age in partnership, parenthood, loss, and the development of independence and self-awareness. The simplicity, beauty, and peace of the outdoors provides an ideal vehicle through which this poet explores complex human emotions. In January in Vermont, Allen writes:
The stars always shine brightest / on the coldest of days, / a reward just for making it.
There is a parallel reverence the speaker has for both the natural world around her and the interpersonal, interior world of humans who make up her daily life. Mountain Offerings is accessible, honest, poignant, and—rooted in nature and the natural world—earthly.

A first-of-its-kind compelling exploration of what it means to be a Black woman in higher education.
Black women are heading to college in record numbers, and more and more Black women are teaching in higher education. But increasing numbers in college don't guarantee our safety there. Willpower and grit may improve achievement for Black people in school, but they don't secure our belonging. In fact, the very structure of higher education ensures that we're treated as guests, outsiders to the institutional family—outnumbered and unwelcome.
Dr. Jasmine Harris shares her own experiences attempting to be a Vassar girl and reckoning with a lack of legacy and agency. Moving beyond the "data points", Dr. Harris examines the day-to-day impacts on Black women as individuals, the longer-term consequences to our professional lives, and the generational costs to our entire families.
"I want to arm as many Black girls and women as I can with the knowledge about these spaces that I lacked," says Dr. Harris. "By laying bare my own traumas, and those of Black women before me, I am providing them the tools to protect themselves, with an understanding of how deliberately many institutions will try to undercut them."
Trial and error has been required of Black students to navigate systems of discrimination and disadvantage. But this book now offers useful support, illuminating the community of Black women dealing with similar issues. The author's story is not unusual, nor are her interactions anomalies. Black Women, Ivory Tower explores why.

When Lina’s idyllic childhood descends into mental chaos in her teenage years, she resorts to recording her thoughts to make sense of her anguish. Through Lina’s heart-wrenching words, the reader steps into her broken inner world to experience first-hand the obsessions, irrationality, angst and ruthlessness of teenage borderline personality disorder. Emo Reality shines a light into the dark corners of adolescent mental illness, demonstrating its ravages not just upon an individual, but upon a whole family.
Lina and her sister shared their lives obsessively with their friends, writing millions of words. The past and present events are their direct experience, condensed into a memoir by her father, who softened their offensive language. The future events—Lina’s therapy and reflections—were added by her father and a psychologist with access to the original sources. In these, Lina navigates the ineluctable evidence in her archives, coached by her therapist. Her research opens a path to love: by identifying and releasing her burden of false memories, blame, and spite, Lina affirms her emotions while questioning her perceptions. Emo Reality is for teens, young adults, and their families, to increase mental health awareness.
"I liked the way this book was written. It had me hooked from the start and was a really interesting read, something completely different to anything I’ve read before." —Joellen L, UK.
"As a mental health therapist I found the mental health representation to be very accurate and insightful. A great job of crafting an interesting narrative based on a real family’s lived experience, and ending with valuable information."—Stephanie L, US.
"We are immersed into the perspective of Lina, now a young adult who’s looking back on her life. This book brought me to tears as Lina recounts episodes of hallucinations and misremembering, a harrowing exploration of someone’s life living with mental illness."—Alicia C, US.
"As a therapist I jumped at the opportunity to read this biography. The author did a wonderful job of explaining the complexities related to mental health and I especially enjoyed the timeframe from childhood to adulthood in terms of how the disorder progressed. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in mental health and psychology."—Alex E, US.
"An unusual book that tells the story of a family who experienced a range of mental health and unhealthy family dynamics. It is strangely compelling, like peeking into a diary, giving insight into how mental health struggles can affect a family in crashing waves. This will be particularly powerful for readers who relate to aspects of it and have not seen themselves reflected so bluntly in a book before."—Amelia J, US.
"Lina is not diagnosed in her younger years which leads to issues at school and with her family. Her mother is immature and self-absorbed, having a relationship with her daughters like that of a friend. Lina’s father was unaware of the seriousness of Lina’s behavior. The book gives insight into BPD and was definitely worth the read."—Toni R, US.
"As a teenager who has borderline personality disorder it’s nice to know that I’m not alone and that other people are there too."—Sreedevi D, TT.
"Wow! This book was a journey. Growing up in a dysfunctional household with her distant father, her mother who speaks terrible English, and her sister who can’t seem to stay on her side, Lina’s personalities multiply while her diagnosis keeps being misinformed. Kudos for a lovely book on a difficult topic."—Tracy B, US.

Why are so many teachers leaving the profession? They're burned out; they feel disrespected, and unsupported. After teaching remotely during a pandemic, they're returning to classrooms with under-socialized and sometimes out-of-control kids. What to do?
Teaching with Heart chronicles the journey of a journalist-turned-teacher determined to make teaching work--despite its difficulties. Peek into Madame Nelson's classroom to see her trying to reach teens who dance, cry, and hit each other in French class; administrators who laud the latest pedagogical trends and testing regime; and parents who sometimes support--and sometimes interfere with--their children's education. Meet colleagues who save her from quitting, and her children who provide advice. Along the journey, she evolves from an aloof elitist into an empathetic listener to all sorts of teens.
Isn't it time we create schools in which teachers want to stay and new ones enter? Without committed teachers, how can we prepare students to run our world? Teaching with Heart illuminates why it's so hard to hold on to classroom teachers these days--and what can be done to better the situation.

In the last few years of the automotive collector market, light trucks have become a hot commodity--especially Chevy trucks. Unlike in the past, heavily modified vehicles command a premium over stock restorations. Owners of these trucks, which were often fairly crude and not much fun to drive, are demanding modern performance and technology in each system. The brakes, suspension, steering, air conditioning, and electronics can be upgraded to make your old truck drive like new. Of course, the drivetrain is arguably the most important part of that equation, and that means swapping an LS or LT engine and a modern transmission into your classic Chevy truck.
To perform a successful LS or LT engine swap into an older Chevy truck, proper planning, the right combination of parts, and the correct information is required to complete the project. How to Swap LS & LT Engines into Chevy & GMC Trucks: 1960-1998provides instruction and guidance for selecting the best engine for your budget, choosing the adapter plates and engine mounts, dropping the engine into the truck, selecting the ideal transmission and drivelines, and completing all facets of the swap. You must ensure that all of the other components on the car are compatible with the engine, so author Bryant instructs you how to integrate the electronic engine control system; select and install the exhaust, intake, and fuel pumps; and upgrade the cooling system for the high-performance LS and LT.
While the swapping process is covered in detail, the author also provides a helpful LS and LT engine guide. This helps you find the best option for your application and understand the different considerations for these two engines. Whether you are ready to get started right now or want to use this book to determine whether you want to tackle this project, this book is essential to making informed decisions along the way.

Cruelty and abuse from his Southern past follow Jack "Half-Pint" Crowe into the Vietnam War. Two tours of combat inflict physical wounds and moral damage, but they also deliver the ministrations of a Navy corpsman named Frank-a holy being who reads mysterious books and befriends Jack, coaxing him inward toward his own wholeness. When Frank is killed in battle, an anguished Half-Pint removes three blood-stained books from Frank's shredded pack.
Those books and his vow of nonviolence carry the Marine home to the swampy borderland of Louisiana and Arkansas. In that summer of return, Half-Pint plunges back into the atmosphere of hell he had longed to escape for good. Hunted by the fanatical Calvin Whitehead after offering help to his wife and son, his vow of nonviolence is challenged in the murky swamplands of the Southern grotesque. He takes refuge in his new oil rig coworkers, a misfit cast of no-gooders on the verge of insanity brought on by the harsh conditions of their job and the undying meaninglessness of a life spent cheating death amid the pulse of true American blue collar work life.
It is through these folds we see the illumination of Half-Pint's evermoving quest for truth and meaning. Guided by Frank's bloodstained books, Half-Pint must shred all he knows to find the thing missing in all of us.

Potty training your child now? Been there, done that?
Either way you will laugh and laugh and laugh some more when you read Oops, Poops – hysterical potty training stories and more.
Inspired by his grandson’s potty training antics, author Irv Brechner has written a book with the funniest potty training stories on planet poop and much more. He’s sifted through piles of dung to scoop up the “crème de la poop” of stories submitted by parents and grandparents.
Oops, Poops provides comic relief for those parents and grandparents are in the middle of the pooping and peeing messes. For everyone else, it will bring back unpleasant and smelly memories of days gone by. For all, it’s “great reading for when you’re doing your own business,” said Brechner. One of the stories is called “Like Puppy, Like Boy.”
One day dad Kyle let out the family dog in the backyard where he did his business near a bush in the corner of the yard. Dad promptly took a bag to collect the poop. Dad didn’t see young James observing this chain of events.
Moments later, James went near a bush on the other side of the yard and promptly pooped, imitating the dog.
When dad started to walk toward James, empty handed, James held up his hand and said, “Dada, stop, bring the bag!”
In addition to hysterical stories, Oops, Poops includes related jokes, riddles, puns and the lyrics to the poopular hit song “Poopin’ USA.” Rounding out the poop parade is a turd word search puzzle and a smell-free pile of cartoons.

A young, talented Viktor Myrnikov is on the brink of realizing his lifelong dream of playing for the National Hockey League when a catastrophic plane crash kills all of his former Russian teammates, including his secret boyfriend, Nikolai, shattering his plans—and his heart.
In this skillfully plotted debut, readers follow Viktor as he navigates cultural and sexual divides, the gamesmanship of damaged relationships, and the dark corners of professional sports. In prose that is as tender as it is tough, we witness a young man discovering inner resources he didn't know he possessed as he struggles to find solace and respect in a world that has denied him of these things. An important discussion of today’s most pressing issues, and a tremendous achievement, Heading North is most certainly a book for our times.
"In Heading North, Holly M. Wendt draws the reader into the world of professional hockey and into Viktor's journey through the weight of silenced grief, through a sport's rigid expectations of gender and sexuality, and through, despite everything, the glimmering hope of social and league-wide change. Wendt is a monumental talent of a writer, and I couldn't wait to read this book. Sharply written and beautifully moving, this debut novel is an absolute must-read."

What do you give a witch who has everything? Apparently, chaos.
Samhain is almost upon us, a time when the barriers between the worlds are thin and rifts open spontaneously. It’s also my birthday.
I want the normal things, you know? Fresh chips, bad witches, hot detective. It’s Samhain, though, so I have to take what I can get…even if that’s a new High Wizard who’s seized the reins and all the audacity, at the best possible time—in the middle of a fae invasion.
Damned if I’m going to be a gracious host, though. Not when the fastest, deadliest, most insidious creatures known have infiltrated our society with mind control and glamor. Certainly not if it means losing everyone and everything I care about. But protecting them, might mean sacrificing myself.

"Anastasia Helena Fenald’s work is an endless ride down every emotional avenue workers must pass to find a job. A sincere and, at times, humorous juxtaposition between looking for work and self-reflection, but most importantly, a touch of cultural richness to the working class that is often unseen and unappreciated. I cackled out loud, shook my fist at The Man, and renewed my allegiance to the working-class hero. I even shed tears as I read the manuscript in preparation for publication in between scouting job listings on Indeed and Idealist. This poetic dramedy is a lyrical lifeline for anyone drowning in the throes of job hunting. As the poet reminds us, we are more than this!" — Brenda Vaca, Author of Riot of Roses & Founder of Riot of Roses Publishing House
Capitalism got you down? Me too.
Do you shell out cookie-cutter answers in every horrible interview? Did society pressure you to enter the workforce, or was that Mom and Dad? Do you fantasize about running away and living off the grid in desolate Wyoming? If you have answered "yes" to any of the following questions, then you are also familiar with getting f*cked by job hunting.
The Art of Job Hunting is Anastasia Helena Fenald's second poetry collection, a classic one-two punch of humorous satire and blunt truth. While taking inspiration from job applications, skill assessments, and interview questions, each poem delivers wit and sarcasm sprinkled with plenty of uncomfortable booming honesty. These poems also embrace the bitter and frustrating aspects of job seeking such as desperation, lying, and not being good enough. Refreshingly, Fenald refuses to answer each question with a lousy fake "can-do" attitude. The Art of Job Hunting is for anyone living paycheck to paycheck, plotting to cannibalize the rich, and still hopeful enough to think they have a chance against nepo babies.
The Art of Job Hunting contains adult material such as harsh language and sexual content, which some readers might find upsetting.

There are creatures lurking in our world. Obscure creatures long relegated to myth and legend. They have been sighted by a lucky—or unlucky—few, some have even been photographed, but their existence remains unproven and unrecognized by the scientific community.
These creatures, long thought gone, have somehow survived; creatures from our nightmares haunting the dark places. They swim in our lakes and bays, they soar the night skies, they hunt in the woods. Some are from our past, some from other worlds, and others have always been with us—watching us, fearing us, hunting us.
These are the cryptids, and Systema Paradoxa tells their tales.

Sometimes, the most dangerous thing... is the truth.
For disgraced cable news producer Hannah Hawthorne, covering the shooting of a pretty NYU sophomore is a chance for redemption. When the story snowballs into a media circus, Hannah’s reporting fans the sensationalistic flames and earns her acclaim. The tragic murder, seemingly the result of random urban gun violence, prompts protests and vigils that further magnify the story.
Meanwhile, Paulo, a reporter for a small online neighborhood newspaper, is following the other murder in Washington Square Park that same night – a Hispanic teen. He discovers an unexpected connection that is political dynamite. When Hannah and Paulo team up, they uncover disturbing facts, leading them to question everything they thought they knew. Their reporting also leads them to the man who might be the killer.
When the story is ready to explode, the truth may be hotter than anyone can handle. Breaking the next scoop could ruin Paulo’s paper and wreck Hannah’s career – and it could get them both killed.
If you like David Baldacci's page-turners, Michael Connelly’s cops, and Sara Paretsky’s quirky characters, you will love The Other Murder.

A story of the Hebrides Revival and so much more!
The words astonishing, amazing, astounding or any other words attempting to articulate this idea; fall woefully short of the mark of truly communicating how much God was in the Hebrides Revival.
The Hebrides Revival took place on the Hebrides Islands of Lewis and Harris, off the north-western coast of Scotland from 1949 to 1953. A jaw dropping account from Duncan Campbell is the heart of The Revival You Want. The Revival You Need! His retelling is from a sermon preached at Faith Mission Bible College in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1968.
Two-time Amazon bestselling author Rick Leland was thirteen at the time and his father was thirty-seven. Leland slightly edited the sermon for clarity and added insightful commentary to inspire readers to press toward revival. The blend of Campbell retelling of God moving in a manner rarely seen on planet Earth, in collaboration with Leland's drawing out of rich lessons to instigate another wave of intensity/passion, is a tool for inspiration and impartation.

How far would you go to rescue your sworn enemy?
Two adversaries on opposite sides of the Eternal Conflict meet by chance and become allied against a new and sinister third power that has entered the fray. The withdrawn Knight of the Light is supposed to be good, and he really kind of is. The Princess of the Dark is supposed to be evil, and she really kind of isn’t. Can they meet in the middle?
Kelso Hart is outcasted from the Light and bearer of the fabled sword "Argenta"—a sentient monster in her own right. The latest in a long line of grim Knights of myth and legend that are cursed to carry the sword, whomsoever unsheathes Argenta becomes nigh unstoppable—and a completely unscrupulous killer.
Ava Pentran is the youngest Princess of the ruling house of the Dark, and harbors a secret known to none. Exiled and hunted by her parents, she lives still only due to her intimidating battle prowess and unique relationship to the Furies—a sect of fierce warrior women who are now her only friends, companions, and protectors. She is also a predator of predators, and her justice is brutal and always fatal.
In a world of magic and madness, Kelso and Ava must find a way to trust each other as they come to grips with a new and unknown complication in the Conflict—a virus that targets those on either side indiscriminately. Those infected are completely changed, their personalities overwritten into something malevolent and chaotic. Knight and Princess both are wounded and disillusioned with the war, but can their unlikely alliance save them? Can it save the world?

The Ebon Knight is the first in a trilogy of books with elements of quirky humor, perilous adventure, and forbidden attraction during an extremely dangerous time. Any fan of dark/urban fantasy will feel right at home!

Editorial Reviews (real ones even!):
In The Ebon Knight by James Wood, readers are thrust into a gripping tale where the lines between good and evil blur as Kelso Hart, an outcast Knight of the Light, and Ava Pentran, the youngest Princess of the Dark, forge an unlikely alliance against a menacing third power in the Eternal Conflict. As the wielder of the sentient sword Argenta, Kelso embodies a grim legacy of cursed Knights, while Ava, exiled and hunted, relies on her formidable battle prowess and a secret tied to the Furies. The duo must confront a new and insidious threat—a virus that transforms the infected into malevolent beings, indiscriminately targeting both Light and Dark. As Kelso and Ava grapple with their own wounds and disillusionment from the ongoing war, their journey becomes a test of trust and survival.
James Wood weaves a spellbinding narrative in a world of magic and madness in this urban fantasy. The Ebon Knight delves into the complexities of character, challenging preconceived notions of heroism and villainy. Wood's narrative prowess shines as he explores the evolving dynamics between Kelso and Ava, inviting readers to question the true nature of the Eternal Conflict. A thrilling blend of fantasy and suspense, this first installment in The Ebon Knight Chronicles promises an enthralling exploration of alliances forged in the crucible of chaos. The world-building and unique characters add so much depth to the story that readers may not want to put this one down. The Ebon Knight is a highly recommended read for fans of the urban fantasy genre. —Reviewed by Demetria Head for Readers' Favorite
In James Wood’s The Ebon Knight, Kelso Hart, Knight of the Light, must face his own internal battles while facing his sworn enemy—the Dark. After an unforgivable tragedy and bearing an evil weapon with a literal mind of its own practically attached to him, he is ready to face death, believing that’s what he deserves. Bring in Ava Pentran, powerful Princess of Darkness, and you’d think he met his match. This isn’t the case in a fighting sense, but surprisingly, it just might be the case romantically. But their newly blossoming love is surely doomed. A Dark and a Light liking each other—and especially loving each other—is unheard of. Together or apart, Ava and Kelso will have to fight to the end for what they believe in this first book of The Ebon Knight Chronicles.
This is a complex work, and at 422 pages, there is enough entertainment here to fill a 20-episode TV show. While Kelso and Ava are discovering each other, they are also dealing with so much besides that—Kelso with his emotional and mental burdens, along with his duty as the storied Ebon Knight. And Ava, with her murderous older sister Jesslyn on the hunt, combined with other things going on in the world of Dark.
An appealing aspect of the story is protagonist Kelso’s special weapon—a sword named Argenta. She lusts for blood and constantly enters Kelso’s mind against his will, encouraging him to wield her and kill anything or anyone with blood running through them. This idea of weapon-bonding is something quite unique, and it’s commendable. This is one of several unusual concepts in this fantasy. As are Wood’s “Furies,” powerful guardians of darkness.
It is obvious that James Wood is an author who subscribes to the “show, don’t tell” form of writing. He doesn’t lay everything out in an overbearing way but writes with the expectation that the reader will be absorbed in the story as he is himself. He has also created one of the absolute darkest, eeriest, and most formidable antagonists that I have ever heard of, in fiction or real life. Jesslyn, or “The Spider,” as she is also known, is truly twisted and utterly fear-imposing. Her nature is far more sinister than her nickname.
The Ebon Knight by James Wood is a fresh adult-oriented fantasy set in the modern day. Throughout the book, he expertly makes readers question what is Light and Dark, good and bad. The story has suspense, danger, and little mysteries that slowly unravel, but above all, it is a love story—a tale of how the unlikeliest of people become a pair. —Reviewed by Michaela Gordoni for Reader Views

An insightful psychiatrist's memoir with careful reflection on the theory and practice of psychiatry, case studies and selected articles published over a diverse career.
"...childhood's time is rekindled in the ashes of lost opportunities. As each person is encouraged to share their needs, the fear of rejection pales and loving is risked again. This I believe is the essence of the healing experience: to be able to be who we are in the presence of another."

This essential book is a rallying cry for women to recognize and reject the ways social media is being weaponized against us — and instead wield it to empower ourselves.
Many women and girls are trying to unplug, from low-tech weekends to Instagram hiatuses and screen time alerts. But disconnecting from the influence of social media is way more complicated than deleting or restricting access to an app.
In Over the Influence, Kara Alaimo demonstrates how social media affects every aspect of women's lives -- from our relationships and our parenting to our physical and mental wellbeing. Over the Influence is a book about what it means to live in the world social media has wrought - whether you're constantly connected or have deleted your accounts forever. Alaimo shows why you're likely to get fewer followers if you're a woman. She explains how fake news is crafted to prey on women's vulnerabilities. And she reveals why so much of the content we find in our feeds is specifically designed to hold us back.
But we can change this. Alaimo offers up brilliant advice for how to get over the influence — how to handle our daughters' use of social media, use apps to find the romantic partners we're looking for and bolster our careers, and protect ourselves from sextortionists, catfishers and trolls. Over the Influence calls on women to recognize and call out the subtle (and not-so-subtle) sexism, misogyny and misinformation we find online and use our platforms to empower ourselves and other women.

The Children of Steel collection shows that engaging fiction of place is possible even for what some call less "scenic" places. But these places have heart! This collection is a way that people from steel mill communities share fiction based upon lives that they, their parents, and grandparents have known. In some of the stories in this collection, the steel mills are highlighted. In other stories, the mills may only be a constant part of the surroundings and a backdrop. But in all cases, these are stories that only can come from those with direct experience of being the children of steel. These contributions are from Jeff Manes, Joan Paylo, Kathy Bashaar, Karen Banks Pearson, Patrick Michael Finn, Sharon Hale Hotko, Curtis Mazzaferri, Barbara Dubos, Joseph S. Pete, Kurt Samano, John Szostek, Hardarshan Sing Valia, Connie Wachala, Alice Whittenburg, Stacy Alderman, Robert McKean, Phyllis Woods, Bianca Roman, Jane Ammeson, and Gloria Ptacek McMillan.
Gloria Ptacek McMillan, the Editor, was born and raised in East Chicago, Indiana. She received her MA in English from Indiana University and Ph.D. at University of Arizona. She has published three books: The Blue Maroon Murder, Orbiting Ray Bradbury’s Mars, and The Routledge Companion to Literature and Class. Her play Universe Symphony (about modernist composer Charles Ives) was performed at the Flandrau Planetarium in Tucson, Arizona. She leads a Zoom Tucson Hard-Science Science Fiction Group and writes articles to bring science into better communication with the arts and humanities. She has lived in Tucson since 1973 with her patient family (husband Bob and now Los Angeles-based son Chris). She visits Chicago and Northwest Indiana, sites of her steel mill town childhood.

It’s early 1939, and Britain enters deeper into a period of momentous political upheaval with the growing threat of a second World War. Daily life continued, as it did for a nineteen-year-old Perthshire lad, son of the local schoolmaster.
Recently graduated from Dundee’s Wireless College, he signed-on at the offices of Christian Salvesen, Leith, to become a participant on their 1939/40 Whaling Expedition to the Antarctic. Hardships abound, but captivating sights and experiences together with a fascination for far-off places, provide the backdrop to this young man’s baptism of fire and ice. Schoolboy heroes are brought closer to home when seeing first-hand Shackleton’s memorial on South Georgia and dodging the crippling effects of icebergs and pack-ice. Dangers were a constant, whether from simply negotiating the decks to scraping ice from the aerials atop the radio room shack on his ‘Catcher’.
The world moved on, and despite being far from the growing European theatre of conflict, his return voyage brought sharp focus on a new threat. The North Atlantic Convoys became the new hunting-ground for Hitler’s U-boat Wolf Packs and Luftwaffe. No less than four of the seven vessels he served on were to be lost to enemy action. ‘Hunter to Hunted’ is an honest and compelling first-hand account of the war at sea, seen through the eyes of a young Scot, as he undertakes his own rite of passage.
From the Antarctic to the North Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean and finally northern Europe, he hoped against the odds to survive these turbulent years, from Hunter to Hunted!

The serial killer is dead; the expected seventh victim is alive, and the Santa Monica detectives and the FBI agents are shaking their heads.
“Who-done-it” meets “why-done-it.” The result: A twisty mystery, spiked with psychological and cultural implications, all playing out in sun-drenched Santa Monica.
Police Detectives Mollie Granger and Greg Nichols respond to a call near the world-famous pier. A dead male, shot in the forehead at close range, is posed in the sand. He’s Keith Victor, a serial killer who’s murdered six persons and kidnapped a possible seventh, Chrissy Weeks.
Meanwhile, six miles away, Weeks walks into a police station, says, “I think you've been looking for me,” and claims Victor dropped her off outside an hour earlier. Quite the trick, given the coroner says Victor’s been dead for thirty-six hours. Weeks, a narcissist with a complex backstory, views most people as chess pieces to be played. And she’s playing at mega speed, even though her never-ending lies and moves – some of which backfire – quickly turn her into a suspect from a victim.
The case comes at a difficult time for Granger, a middle-class white cop having relationship problems with Gwen Seward, a wealthy African-American civil rights attorney. They’ve drifted apart since the George Floyd murder shined a bright light on their differences and challenges. They’ve even tabled plans for marriage and kids.
Granger focuses on Weeks even as she and Seward attempt to repair their relationship. In the process, the detective learns that families, love, truth, and understanding overcome personal and professional challenges and bring unexpected second chances.

"Shawe Ruckus has created a magnificent world full of otherworldly creatures and futuristic technology, resulting in a uniquely engaging setting where you are completely immersed." – Readers' Favorite

Imagine you are living in a rockpool that is uncovered by the sea twice a day. Here you will meet lots of different animals that the sea brings in, sometimes dangers and don’t forget to watch out for the greedy seagulls!
This book meets a type of baby shark who looks scary to the animals in the rockpool and we learn why it is good to talk about our worries and fears.
At the end of each book, there is a page for adults to share with the readers that produce interesting facts about the animals or provide more depth on the issue depicted in the story.
I am a marine biologist working for over 40 years in this field and have a deep love and understanding for the animals and plants of our oceans. I spent much of my childhood ‘rock-pooling’ and this led me onto a lifelong career protecting and learning about the sea and its inhabitants. Those willing to cast aside any presupposed notions of how a narrative has traditionally been constructed and embrace the tesseract of Khatri’s groundbreaking multi-layered, interwoven alternate realities will no doubt be richly rewarded for having done so. Shekhar Khatri’s Grasslands is a rare glimpse of uncharted literary territory, ideal for those seeking a bit of literary magic and mysticism with a surreal twist." - Rich Follett at Reader's Favorite

Alice on a Friday Night is a novel of addictions and dreams. Working at a bar and searching for her own path in life, the protagonist, Alice, enjoys studying people with a nearly-scientific devotion. She is not a passive bystander. A rebel with a strong inclination for trouble, Alice is always thrilled to experience everything first-hand, including the dark stuff. The realities of different addictions are what fascinate Alice the most. Love is an addiction. Trying to understand people is an addiction. As are drugs, alcohol, and eating disorders. And every addiction is a whole new world worth exploring.
Throughout Alice’s turbulent journey, she digs herself ever-deeper into a world of wild nights out, dealing with depression, and a trip across the ocean, only to find that she doesn’t quite fit in anywhere. Along the way she encounters a myriad of peculiar characters who profoundly alter her perspectives on life. And, as expected, things quickly start to spiral out of control. Alice on a Friday Night can be regarded as coming of age, new adult fiction. The word count is 57 000. There are some illustrations incorporated in an interesting way.

As far as failures go, I’m very successful.
My name is Simon Fox and I’m now a member of the Decree.
But how did I accomplish this you ask? Did I succeed in my mission to abduct Jake Towers, the notorious captain of the spaceship Unbound? Were the authorities ecstatic when I walked him into their jail cell within a storm of falling confetti?
The answer is an obvious no.
I admire the guy, despite being younger, better looking and far more intelligent than me. It’s not that I failed my mission, I just decided not to complete it. That’s my official statement, anyway.
The crew turned out to be family, especially the engineer, Tinks. She’s like my psychotic little sister, electrocuting dolls for fun. It’s scary that she manages the ship’s environmental systems. Waking up in my room with zero oxygen levels was not an enjoyable experience.
We’re on the trail of the elusive villain named Cube. He’s a dangerous man in a suit with a cube for a head. After almost killing Tinks, he’s on our most wanted list. Aside from our mission of vengeance, we’re also searching for the origins of the abandoned derelict convoy.
But what other challenges stand in my way? Because I’m new to the Decree, I must complete my onboarding, initiation and induction. The greatest of these tasks is simple:
Heist the biggest score in space history and solidify my name as the greatest space pirate in the sector.
For I am “Him”, and I am not.

Prisoner of Consequence is a transformative guide to taking back your personal power and breaking free from self-imposed limitations.
In this empowering book, author Chima T. Obinna draws on his own journey of awakening to provide a blueprint for readers to escape the mental prisons constructed through unconscious patterns and limiting beliefs.
Obinna recognizes that we often feel trapped by circumstances beyond our control and roles assigned by others. We view ourselves as helpless victims rather than volunteers of our destiny. But the door to a new life story lies within our grasp if we can summon the courage to walk through.
We can dismantle the belief that outside forces determine our fate by embracing an "I Happen" mindset of radical personal responsibility. We alone hold the pen to author our unique path. Obinna provides illuminating examples of how our choices and default reactions - though often unconscious - manifest the conditions that confine us. Self-reflection reveals where our prisons stem from generational patterns, fears, core wounds, and societal messaging rather than external forces.
The book outlines a step-by-step system for transmuting limiting narratives by revolutionizing our consciousness. Fundamental shifts at the deepest levels of our being are required to enact lasting change. Obinna shares the methodical processes he applied in his own life to reinvent himself from the inside out. This system provides a blueprint for aligning our outer lives with inner truth.
Obinna unpacks how mastering our reactions enables us to respond to any circumstance with wisdom and grace consciously. We can live pleasantly regardless of conditions by avoiding snap judgments, letting go of assumptions, and embracing challenges as teachers. He also illuminates the path to bold living through discovering one's passion, sharing gifts generously, and creating an empowering legacy.
Prisoner of Consequence provides inspiring examples of escaping self-imposed suffering through courage, perseverance, and reprogramming entrenched mental patterns. Obinna demonstrates how taking charge of our personal narrative is the key that unlocks limitless possibilities. Readers will feel emboldened to break free of limitations and live their highest vision. This book provides an indispensable roadmap for anyone seeking to reinvent their life story.

When Dr. Cotton Barnes, a happily married psychologist from Raleigh, North Carolina, signs on to treat the family, she is challenged to the edges of her own fragile boundaries as cracks in the veneer of the Prescotts' lives become craters.
The family members relate their stories in their chosen voices, each narrative in a different format. Marcus, the youngest, speaks to Cotton through his avatars; Gray, the mother, distances herself by referring to herself in the third person; the oldest child, Janis-a self-avowed loner-uses a defunct social media app; while the middle child, Cheryl, tries to keep everyone personally happy in person; and Hailey, the novelist father, hides behind her journals.
The Prescotts take turns breaking down and breaking through a roller coaster of emotions that mirrors what's happening in the Raleigh area: a series of LGBTQ+ hate crimes rocks the community to its core. Telling herself she must save them, Cotton stalks the family, but when Hailey Prescott becomes the latest victim of brutality, Cotton is forced to make a decision that will determine whether she saves her own marriage or the Prescotts. Or herself.
Analyzing the Prescotts is the latest from Dawn Reno Langley, a novelist who Foreword Reviews says writes with "authority and fine craftsmanship."

"A complete masterpiece that touches the life of a Dalit woman to the fullest..." Samata Foundation, Nepal
Durga and Prabesh, a young intercaste couple from Nepal, are discovered having a secret affair. The threat of violent reprisal prohibits any hope of staying together, and they are forced to follow very different paths. This is their story.
In a remote Himalayan village where casteism is rife and poverty is endemic, teenaged Durga does her best to accept her karma, and her hastily arranged marriage to a violent alcoholic. Durga’s only joy is the secret knowledge that Prabesh is her son’s father, and she nurtures hope that one day they will be reunited through their son, and they will all escape to Kathmandu together.
But there is no escape in sight. Instead, Durga is continually brutalised by her alcoholic husband and forced to endure daily discrimination because of an unfair caste system. She tries hard, but it is a struggle to accept that this is her karma. When she discovers the local community is outraged at her because she did not give birth in the squalid and unhygienic communal hut – and that her husband has stolen her meagre savings to go on a drinking binge, Durga has finally had enough. Violence, injustice, discrimination, poverty. The time has come to rebel – to fight for a better life for her children, for her neighbours, for herself. But defying age-old traditions and ingrained prejudices – by one who is the most oppressed – is an intimidating journey. Durga must find the courage – and her voice – before she can succeed.
In Durga’s home village, schoolteacher Prabesh believes it was not karma but deep-rooted discrimination – and the threat of violence – that prevented he and Durga from being together. As a high caste, Prabesh comes from privilege. His life as a respected teacher in rural Nepal is idyllic by comparison. He has never been hungry and has never wanted for anything. The only infringement on Prabesh’s rights come from his overly meddling mother, and his shamelessly bigoted and corrupt father. Angry at his inability to defy his father and marry Durga, Prabesh sets up a social work program to assist the impoverished children in his village.
For Prabesh, the program has special significance. It targets children from the same caste as Durga, and their families are mostly victims of his father's corrupt practices. Prabesh's dislike for his father continues to increase the more he discovers the extent of the poverty, and it is difficult not to be overwhelmed. But he perseveres, and his dedication arouses both sympathy and donations from overseas. Prabesh's father, upon hearing of the donations, insists on becoming involved in the program, and his greedy machinations force Prabesh to confront both ethical and moral dilemmas. The only way to keep the project alive, and help all those children, is for Prabesh to find his voice, and the courage to defy his father.

A 60s/70s memoir that will stay with you forever.
Growing up in the 1960s and 70s was tough at times, especially as a woman.
In her moving, heartbreaking, entertaining and unforgettable memoir, J. M. Shorney shares stories and events from her life as she tried to gain her independence and overcome the challenges she faced.
Working as a female butcher in an all-male environment came with its own problems at a time when women were classed as second-class citizens and sex objects. But this didn’t stop J. M. Shorney from succeeding, and neither did the constant sexual abuse from her balding, sad, 50-something-year-old boss.
When the author became pregnant at 19, she was single, and although the baby’s father (and domineering grandfather) tried to pressure her into marrying, she declined. She had the loving support of her parents and knew she would work even harder to provide for her baby. Even when a local, childless, wealthy woman offered her £1,000 to hand over her baby, she refused. Sadly, the woman and the author’s boss (who believed women with children should stay at home) made all kinds of threats when the baby’s birth drew close.
But that was not all. You see, good-looking men drew her like magnets. One, a young Hungarian boy, left a huge mark on her life. She couldn’t see past his looks, and despite him being violent and jealous, spending time in Borstal and later becoming a hardened criminal, he was like a drug to the author.
There are so many stories to tell, too … from almost running away with a young man the night before his wedding to coming-of-age sexual adventures in Brighton (at Devil’s Dyke) and, of course, the night she met her beloved Mike, whom she later married.
Grab a copy of Dangerous Lovers today and take a walk down memory lane, back to the Swinging Sixties and Seventies, a time when British life and culture were so much different.

In fairy tales, things just fall into place. Fortunately life has the capacity to be a bit more rewarding than that.
While understanding:
- how to recognize “the one”
- a means to affirm the Divine Feminine in Islam
- achieving life partnership(s)
- the line between destiny and will
- drawing lines in positive projection and limerence
…are beneficial, that’s not what soulmates are about. Knowledge is empowering. Keeping Allah (Source, The Divine, whatever you call it) first through soul-care, harmonizes the heartache and grief we’re each bound to face sometime in life.
Between these no-nonsense essays are excerpts of a story that sequels the first in this series, Loveletters: Soulmates, Salafis and Sufis. It is satirical of traditional fairy -tales, and celebratory of the Divine Feminine in Quran and Prophetic Tradition.

After rescuing The Lady Tsilania and restoring the crystal key to its rightful place, Marcus Beltram settled into life with his family and put all thoughts of Alkademah behind him. That was until his four-year-old daughter revealed that she could see gateways.
But these were not the silvery gateways Marcus was familiar with. Nor did they hum soothingly when Marcus listened for them. The gateways were now a roiling, dirty orange, like molten copper. And instead of the gentle hum he was accustomed to, they grated cruelly, like old machinery on the point of failure.
Worse still, as he watched, one disappeared, and then another. The gateways were dying. And possibly so was Alkademah.
Marcus knows he must try to reach Alkademah. How can he convince Dana that he has to return to a place that came close to claiming his sanity and his life?
With the gateways dying, if Marcus should reach Alkademah, will he be able to find his way home?
Find out in Return to Alkademah.

An illustrated poetry collection, The Scream is an effort to lay bare the cruelty, injustice, and suffering of those who are marginalized and oppressed, those who are called others, wretched outcasts, and destitute inferiors who have been pushed into a dark abyss. This collection was born out of a desire to confront the untold truths of those left out and ignored.
"Is it a cry born out of pain, an act of defiance or an appeal for understanding? The Scream is a courageous book that revivifies repetition as the tradition of classical Persian poetry. Through these assemblages, Sukoot illuminates the narratives of an author—and a people—who have been to hell and back, and been traumatized by wounds so deep they may never heal. Bearing witness to agonies of oppression and the shock of tyranny, the poems reverberate in the brain long after they have touched us on the page." —Rebecca Ruth Gould, Distinguished Professor of Comparative Poetics and the author of Writers and Rebels
"Out of pain, trauma 'as the anthem of war comes to an end,' Sukoot, dares to draw the 'sacred utterance.' In anguish, a silence breaks open, asks what wrongdoings can be righted when there is 'no ear to hear…no eye to see.' The Scream awakens sorrow, alienation, and provides apt courage, through word and image, to lament the long aggrieved. An essential, passionate collection, which wrestles against the physical domination of spirit." —Maureen Alsop, PhD, Tony Quagliano Poetry Award winner and the author of Pyre
"A bold exploration of the many voices that lie between the Iranian people and the Persian literary heritage, this is an intense and moving collection that will be loved by those who are familiar with Iranian literature as well as new readers. This is protest poetry at its most beautiful, poetic, and raw." —Aaron Kent, the director of Broken Sleep Books and the author of The Working Classic

"Broken, shattered, empty husks driven by a whirlwind. The clans shall be riven from their heart and cast into the furnace. And this before the snows return."
Three hundred years ago, the human race would have died out if not for a few who created and swore to abide by the Resolution, which bound the remnants together with a common purpose and gave them the tools to survive in a harsh land. Little by little, the clans grew and prospered despite innumerable disasters wrought by the relentless battering of talieth and vargoda. But now a new cataclysm approaches, one that will strain the very bonds the Resolution was meant to safeguard - and even salvation brings untold devastation.

In October 2016, Lynn Hamilton found herself doubled over a sidewalk experiencing her second anxiety attack.
That was the impact of the threats and subterfuge from work colleagues she once thought she could trust. And her story is by no means unique. Though few of their stories are known, thousands of people experience bullying in the workplace. Fear of retaliation, a desire to forget, or a lack of evidence are just some of the reasons why these stories remain hidden.
Divided into four gripping sections, this memoir delves deep into Hamilton’s harrowing lived experience. From deteriorating trust and collaboration with her manager and coworkers, to the insomnia that then began to cloud her judgement, Hamilton spares no detail in the recount of her torment and abuse.
With courage and help, Hamilton finally chose to speak up. Would there be a breakthrough?
Blood in the Water is a raw and powerful testament to resilience, highlighting the importance of addressing workplace bullying and the profound lessons that emerge from the depths ofadversity.

"That one event, that one ten-minute car ride, radically bowled over my life's kaleidoscope."
What's in a name?
Her trailblazer of a distant cousin forged a solitary, singular path during and after WWII. Unassuming and somewhat clueless, Christine eventually finds she has to do pretty much the same. A teen fully expecting her Midwestern life would be drab and ho-hum, she meets in Germany an elderly man who offered her a ride - and insight into a legacy she was going to rely on throughout her entire life.
Marrying the wrong guy, divorced, isolated, and responsible for four chronically ill children, she charged forward, brooking no fools to get her children the healthcare and education they richly deserved, even if that meant blackmailing the governor of Iowa. She took on the powers that be (including spooks invading her home for six months), while always striving for the career she pined for.
Throughout all the decades of financial and personal setbacks and the chaos that swirled around her, Christine's legacy constantly beckoned her: to be worthy of that distant cousin, WWII's most decorated courier, and of a timeless love story she witnessed.
Christine's life journey, including her 12 years in Poland (her other homeland), is a stirring testament to determination, imagination, and the power of perseverance.

The Contraption is a novel that deals with the challenges faced by Audrey Crane, a woman who has been recruited into a dangerous, coercive religious cult. She had been weeks away from her wedding at the time. Her fiancé, Matthias Pleasant, is left in the dark, not even knowing where she is. Her name has been changed and she has been relocated to another state. The cult, Church of the Mountain of Radiance, is an all-controlling psychological prison. Audrey was lured in initially through the deceptive tactics, self-hypnosis and guided imagery rituals brought to her by a team of recruiters.
One step leads to another, as her mind becomes totally occupied by the propaganda, bizarre rituals, arcane rules, and thought-stopping practices of the group. A new personality emerges, an artificial "cult self" to go with her new name. Matthias launches a struggling effort to find her, aided by certain family members and some cult researchers they meet along the way. Matt leads the search, and says he "just wants to talk to her." But his great hope is to snap her out of whatever this is, and resume the life they had before this most abrupt, heart-rending separation. The author, Barton A. Stewart is a long time student of the cult phenomenon, and The Contraption will be among the most realistic fictional depictions of the kinds of things that can happen in cases like this. Avoiding the sensationalism of so many novels, Stewart offers a look into another world, which unfortunately exists in the real world.
First and foremost, this is a story of lovers separated in the cruelest of ways, and the all-out effort to restore that love. The title comes from a cult researcher's analogy of mind control as a "faulty, buggy, manmade machine, inserted by deception into a healthy psyche." Mind control is the ultimate pitfall. And mind control is - The Contraption.

Children of the Cross delves into the complexities of families, exploring how generational gaps and parental expectations shape the lives of children. At its core, the story unravels the poignant conflict between a mother and daughter, deepened by a widening generation divide. Parents' struggles to find common ground on their daughter's upbringing add a rich layer to the family's discord.
The plot gains complexity with the introduction of a pastor whose fervent desire is for his son to follow in his sacred calling. This intensifies the tension within the family, and fate weaves these individual struggles into a cohesive tapestry of interconnected destinies.
Amidst the familial storm, a heart-wrenching moment unfolds as the daughter tearfully questions her identity in a world seemingly at odds with who she is. Sadly, her plea for understanding is drowned out by the overwhelming discord between her parents, leaving her emotionally adrift.
The narrative takes an unexpected turn when a secret relationship blossoms between the daughter, Felicity, and another girl, Portia. This revelation triggers a tumultuous reaction from Felicity’s mother, who grapples with societal expectations and her own understanding of her daughter's identity.
“You devil.” “You devil”. “I should have known. You’re not… you’re not my daughter.”
Children of the Cross is a captivating journey exploring faith, identity, and family dynamics. It skillfully navigates the weight of societal norms, leading to unexpected twists that challenge characters and readers alike to reconsider expectations and grasp the intricate dance between familial bonds and personal growth.
