A collection of mostly minor stories, essays and speeches by Gaiman, including his first ever fiction publication in Imagine issue 14, which came out in May 1984, so I must have bought it at the time without realising its historical importance. A couple of these were already familiar to me, including the famous George R.R. Martin is not your bitch blogpost which I saw when it was first published. There were a surprising number of typos (especially in that first story). Can be safely skipped. ( )

Kan het niet helpen maar het lijkt wel alsof bijna alles wat Neil Gaiman schrijft boeiend is.

In dit kleine boekje staan wat hijzelf in de inleiding noemt de B-kantjes oftewel de schrijfsels die ergens bij horen maar zelf niet het hoofdmenu zijn. Dit varieert van inleiding op een boek tot een toespraak bij een prijsuitreiking. En ook heeft hij twee stukken van zijn blog in dit boekje opgenomen, stukken naar aanleiding van vragen van lezers. Ook is er nog een stuk over het bijwonen van een concert van The Dresden Dolls waarin zijn destijds verloofde een van de muzikanten is. De emoties die hieruit spreken zijn zo recht uit het hart en toch ook weer niet sentimenteel, daar is Neil Gaiman te Engels voor en gelukkig maar. Want dit maakt dat alle stukken van zijn hand zowel humoristisch als oprecht zijn en tegelijkertijd ook weer wat onderkoeld. Precies dat waardoor je door het onderwerp wordt meegenomen en je pas op het einde van het stuk merkt dat je alweer bent overtuigd door zijn mening.

Geen boek van zijn hand dat je gelezen zou moeten hebben maar als fan is het een lekker toetje. ( )

A Little Gold Book of Ghastly Stuff by Neil Gaiman is a collection of rarities, or as Neil states in his introduction 'B-Sides'. It contains short stories such as Featherquest, Neil's first professional sale, in its original long form, poetry, essays such as an homage to the Dresden Dolls, book reviews, blog posts and award acceptance speeches. I immensely enjoyed reading this collection which shows the versatility of Neil's work and the dedication he brings to the written word. I waited 6 years for the final installment of Borderland Press's Little Books and it surpassed my expectations, marking a perfect end for a very special series. There is an unsigned second printing available and I recommend you do grab one while they are still available. ( )
