Harlan Ellison was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 27, 1934. He was the author of numerous short story collections including Strange Wine; The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World; Harlan Ellison's Watching; Deathbird Stories; Repent Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman; I Have No Mouth and afficher plus I Must Scream; and Stalking the Nightmare: Stories and Essays. He received numerous awards including the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, the Bram Stoker Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Horror Writer's Association, the Edgar Allen Poe Award, and the Grand Master Award for lifetime achievement from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2011. He published two collections of his columns on television for the Los Angeles Free Press entitled The Glass Teat and The Other Glass Teat. He edited several anthologies including Dangerous Visions: 33 Original Stories and Medea: Harlan's World. He received the Milford Award for Lifetime Achievement in Editing. He also wrote scripts for TV series including Burke's Law, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. He served as creative consultant on the new version of The Twilight Zone in the 1980s and as conceptual consultant on Babylon 5. He won the Writer's Guild of America's Award for Most Outstanding Teleplay four times. He died on June 27, 2018 at the age of 84. (Bowker Author Biography) afficher moins

- Harlan Ellison, né en 1934, s'est affirmé depuis le milieu des années 60 comme une figure clé de la scène littéraire américaine sans distinction de genre. Sa fameuse anthologie Dangereuses visions (1967), ses talents d'animateur (c'est lui qui a lancé Dan Simmons), voire de polémiste, son oeuvre variée, presque entièrement constituée de nouvelles qui lui ont valu un nombre impressionnant de distinctions, font de lui plus qu'un écrivain : une véritable centrale d'énergie. Les nouvelles de La Machine... ont été choisies par l'auteur lui-même. L'ouvrage constitue donc une carte de visite idéale et chronologique couvrant une période allant de 1967 à 1980. La nouvelle qui donne son titre au recueil semble provenir en droite ligne de La quatrième dimension : une machine à sous et un joueur dont la chance semble enfin avoir tourné, qui enchaîne jackpot sur jackpot, au grand dam de la direction du casino. Mais derrière l'anecdote, le message est clair : rien n'est gratuit et il n'y a pas de rédemption à l'horizon pour les perdants dans la société de l'Amérique moderne. On retrouve ce pessimisme teinté de colère dans la plupart des nouvelles d'Ellison. Attention ! Auteur en colère, et dont le talent lui donne l'occasion de faire mouche le plus souvent, sans tomber dans le prêchi-prêcha. Dix ans plus tard, en 1975, dans La plainte des chiens battus, l'Amérique moderne s'est dotée d'un panthéon de nouveaux dieux qui règnent sur les mégalopoles (New York, dans cette nouvelle) et exigent des sacrifices de chair et de sang en échange de la protection qu'ils accordent à leurs disciples. Ceux-là abandonnent leur humanité pour une sécurité illusoire dans la jungle des villes. Les autres nouvelles du recueil ne disent pas autre chose, mais sans jamais donner le sentiment au lecteur d'une quelconque redondance, car Ellison, non content d'être un styliste hors pair, est aussi doté d'une imagination fertile : ses idées sont passées en fraude dans des nouvelles dont l'intrigue n'est jamais sacrifiée au profit des opinions de l'auteur.
Alors, cette douzaine de nouvelles représente-t-elle dignement Harlan Ellison ? La réponse est oui, sans aucun doute, et jusqu'à l'agacement qu'il peut parfois susciter. Ellison l'avoue bien volontiers dans les introductions qu'il a rédigées pour chaque nouvelle : il est sa principale source d'inspiration. Le plus souvent, il parvient à transcender cette dimension personnelle et nous donne des textes universels qui parlent de l'humain. Dans certains cas (Mal de solitude), la proximité de sa source d'inspiration rend le résultat pour le moins hermétique. À cette réserve mineure près, La Machine aux yeux bleus a sa place dans toute bibliothèque de SF et de fantastique qui se respecte. Espérons que l'accueil que vous lui réserverez encouragera Flammarion a poursuivre sa redécouverte d'un des auteurs majeurs du XXe siècle.… (plus d'informations)
