PlaidStallion (16): Classic of the 1960s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

Until now, Space Operas had treated other planets as tokens in war games, speculative SF had treated them as conundrums to master, and Planetary Romances had settled in for nice, long wallows in nookshotten dells and abysses that never end. With Dune, planets began to show how heavy they were, how intractable, how unlikely it was that an entire world would sit up and beg for humans to seed it with supermarkets. Arrakis is a sandworld, with its own precise and deadly ecology; the citizens of Arrakis must live, like Arabs in the heart of the desert, in an austere symbiosis with the vast dynamisms that they have tweaked with their need for spice, the Immortality drug that only sandworms can deliver. The hero, Paul Atreides, gives himself to the planet: his slow metamorphosis into a kind of god extends through the several sequels of Dune, culminating in God-Emperor of Dune.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (11): Classic of the golden age according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

It is one of literature’s most famous openings: “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” Orwell never lets the pace slacken: Nineteen Eighty-Four is famous for its satire on both left and right, for doublethink, and for Big Brother, who is watching you; but almost more important than anything is the feverishness of the telling. The book is a nightmare: it feels like constant pressure, like a world mutilated by its political owners, like entrapment, despair, sudden brief joy. It may fail to describe contemporary politics, but for many it captures contemporary life.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (17): Classic of the 1960s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

Published without much fanfare as a paperback original, The Left Hand of Darkness soon became one of the most discussed SF novels ever. Dissertations on Le Guin fall like autumn leaves upon the eager student. The book itself, fortunately, merits the attention it has received. The humans who inhabit the planet Winter come ultimately from the same stock as humans from Earth, but they have evolved as hermaphrodites, and take on either male or female characteristics, seemingly at random, when in sexual heat. A “normal” human envoy treks across the planet, learning a great deal about his own assumptions about sex, gender roles, and power. Because Le Guin is a didactic writer, most of what he learns applies directly to our own riven world.… (plus d'informations)

Brave New World is second only to Nineteen Eighty-Four as the most famous SF novel ever. Ironically, neither was published as SF: in 1932, the term was hardly known beyond pulp magazines. For Huxley, Brave New World was the culmination of a series of novels anatomizing the consequences of World War I. It reeks of aftermath, loss of faith, obeisance to new gods of technology, and the allure of raw pleasure. “Feelies” prefigure virtual reality by half a century, and “soma” predicts the use of drugs as a technique of social control: Huxley could not guess that, a few decades later, feelies and soma would be options, not controls.

PlaidStallion (8): Early science fiction classic according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

Twain’s traveler goes back and rejigs the past; Wells’s travels forward, and witnesses not only the fate of human beings on Earth, but the last moments of the planet, from the final terminal beach, as the sun dies. The story is told in a calm, assured, plausible, and absolutely clear manner; it is a tone that many SF writers would later emulate. It is indeed hard to disbelieve the Time Traveler when he returns to 1895 to tell his friends about humanity’s devolution into two species, the delicate but useless Eloi and the deformed but competent Morlocks. When he describes the end of time itself, few readers could have failed to understand Wells’s message: evolution is not always on our side.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (19): A More Significant classic of the 1970s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

This may be Ursula Le Guin’s most brilliant act of thought in fictional form, although it will never be either her most popular novel or a book that haunts its readers' dreams. It depicts a utopia, or rather a double utopia (as the subtitle puts it, An Ambiguous Utopia), set on a planet and its almost-barren moon. An emissary from the smaller, ecologically sound, small-is-beautiful culture on the impoverished moon visits the richer, larger, technology-dominated world. But, as the subtitle implies, the story is not as one-sided as it might sound. Each world suffers from its adherence to an ideal of society that undervalues some intrinsically important human needs. The book as a whole is complex, fruitful, and vibrant with thought.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (22): A More Significant classic of the 1980s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

Gibson never claimed to have invented Cyberpunk, or cyberspace, or even to know much about computers. Myths abound about the creator of Neuromancer, but the story goes that he wrote this first novel the most famous and influential SF novel of the 1980s, on an old portable typewriter. The truth does not matter much, because Gibson did something other than describe viable computer routines. Through his potent imaginative grasp of things yet unseen, and some highly poetic writing, he manages to convey in Neuromancer so vivid a sense of the texture of virtual reality that, years later, we still seem to be feeling what he told us we would. More than that, he creates a myth for cyberspace: the myth of the mean-streets cowboy who hustles and rustles data from under the noses of the corporations who own us.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (4): CLASSIC OF THE 1960s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

Heinlein Unbound, in spades. Stranger in a Strange Land was in 1961 by far the longest SF book ever published, and the first SF novel by a genre author to explode into bestsellerdom. It is cantankerous, talky, gripping, prolix, and very subversive indeed. When Valentine Michael Smith, raised by Martians, comes back to Earth as a stranger with paranormal powers, he finds human society incomprehensible. Jubal Harshaw, a Heinlein mouthpiece, sets him straight in radical libertarian terms. Experience everything with your magic touch, he says: cannibalism, free love, the painless killing of “grokking.” One of the readers of the book, tellingly, was Charles Manson. Eventually, Valentine “discorporates” in a religious haze.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (12): Classic of the 1950s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

One topic disregarded in much American SF is evolution – evolution, that is, as a process. There is no lack of mutated monsters or hypertrophied super-brains “evolved” from “normal” human stock; what is lacking is any sense that evolutionary processes operate in a slow, incremental fashion, without huge visible leaps from “normality” – in Darwinian terms, of course, there is no such thing as normal. This most famous novel of the most dominant English SF writer of the century revives in genre SF a concern with the longer evolutionary perspectives common to both H.O. Wells and Olaf Stapledon. The plot is both dramatic and serene. The aliens who suddenly take over and govern Earth do so not, it turns out, for their own benefit, but as nursemaids while humans evolve to a point where they can migrate into union with a universal Oversoul.… (plus d'informations)

The most astonishing fact about this remarkable text is that Heinlein wrote it as a juvenile and assumed that Scribners, who published his children’s books, would happily publish it. Scribners balked at thrusting this savage tale into the library market, and Putnam took it as an adult book – which it is. Starship Troopers marks the start of its author’s late period: Heinlein Unbound. It traces the coming of age of a cadet who learns to be a warrior ready for just the kind of conflict that many Americans were coming to abhor (Vietnam was just around the corner). But Heinlein set his face against liberal values: questioning Honor and Duty was poisonous, and sapped the manhood out of a boy.… (plus d'informations)

It was an easy assumption for the old SF to make: Mars would be easy to reach, but not very interesting to settle on. It would be a stepping stone to the stars. Since the Sputnik satellites, however, our understanding of things has darkened. Mars is not that easy to reach (although it is possible to do it), and it would be very interesting to settle on. Red Mars – and its sequels, Green Mars and the projected Blue Mars – tell us how terraforming might, in fact, happen. The detail is riveting and illuminating. The protagonists are told in the round. The tension is great. The ethical debate over terraforming is incisive. The triumph is earned.… (plus d'informations)

One of the ancient Greek theories about the nature of the universe states that at its center – which is the Earth – the universe is dense and clogged with matter, and that the farther you managed to get from that center, the more liberated and godlike you would become. In this novel, Vinge translates this theory into late-20th-century science and SF terminology. As you leave the great accumulations of stars and planets that make up the galaxy, you escape the terrible slowness of matter: your brain and your body both speed up, and plots spin a lot faster too. The tale involves humans, lots of aliens (who actually run things), giant AIs, huge depths of time and space, and a galaxy-encompassing internet. It is wonderfully done and immensely enjoyable.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (15): Classic of the 1960s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

It often happens: the most famous book an author writes is the one book he dislikes most. Burgess was a very contrary, inflammatory personality, and did not take easily to Stanley Kubrick’s icily violent film of his work, but it is still unfortunate that he so turned against his best SF – the rest tends to alternate unattractively between dyspepsia and tedium. Here, though, is the real thing: an Orwellian slum, whose inhabitants speak a pronged, barbarous argot, beautifully imagined by Burgess. The ironies of the young thug brainwashed by the state to ensure that the thought of violence will make him sick lash like snakes. The hopeful ending of the British edition was cut from the American edition.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (13): Classic of the 1950s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

Slightly revised as The Stars My Destination, and better known in America under that title, Bester’s second SF novel retells Dumas’s classic The Count of Monte Cristo for the Space Age. Gully Foyle is abandoned to certain death in a derelict spaceship by men who become rich and powerful through treachery, and escapes by teleporting across the Solar System. He suffers further imprisonment and torture before gaining his revenge; in the end, satiated, he passes on his paranormal gifts to the people of the planets. The raw bones of the story would be rich fare for most, but what makes some critics call Tiger! Tiger! the greatest SF novel ever is the richness of the language and the seamy veracity of its portrait of urban life, which points 25 years up ahead into the world of Cyberpunk.… (plus d'informations)

PlaidStallion (3): CLASSIC OF THE 1950s according to SCIENCE FICTION The Illustrated Encyclopedia by John Clute:

Asimov must be the most famous American SF writer to debut in book form as late as 1950. The stories that made up his Foundation and Robot series had been appearing for years in the pages of Astounding magazine, and “Nightfall” (1941) was already being acclaimed the best SF story ever written, but it was only with the appearance of I, Robot early in 1950 that he stepped into a larger limelight. The Three Laws of Robotics were – as Asimov hinted in later years – better at generating good stories than they were at describing the field of cybernetics. Certainly in this book, the laws that keep robots in the service of humans also help Asimov to construct a set of affectionate, gripping, argumentative tales.… (plus d'informations)

Gateway was an exhilarating start to Pohl’s Heechee series. Following the success of his Man Plus, it both reasserts his dominant position in the field, and moves into new territory: the territory of the contemporary SF universe, a universe in which it is no longer simply assumed that Homo sapiens will necessarily take the leading role. Humanity has discovered a network of gateways that provide access to the riches of the galaxy, but the price of this cornucopia is that in accepting it, we must also simultaneously accept an extremely junior role in the universe, which we must be content with, forever.… (plus d'informations)
