aulsmith: I've enjoyed Allende in the past and this one is on my TBR pile

bluepiano: Well-written & intelligent though at bottom it's chick-lit. Read it when you want a bit of educated froth.

ahef1963: I read this in paperback ages ago and loved it. Terry Pratchett's witches are favourites of mine.

elkiedee: Well written and often very funny.

bluepiano: Inconsequential but enjoyable. Very British.

aulsmith: I've read Affinity (good) and Night Watch (way over written). If you don't care about historical lesbians, you could give this a miss.

bluepiano: Wonderful and re-readable--I'd put it near the top of your TBR list.

ahef1963: I suddenly have the entire set. Have read some in the past, really liked them.

aulsmith: My current favorite book. A light academic comedy with a message about redemption.

elkiedee: This is excellent but it is very sad and it might not be the best book to read if you're grieving. When my dad had left my mum she made the mistake of seeking recommendations for reading from her father - he suggested this and Miss Lonelyhearts. Not sure what he was thinking!

Dilara86: Mahfouz is one of my favourite authors. This is the 1st novel of the Cairo trilogy, about the life of a Cairo family, from the time of the British occupation to the 40s.

bluepiano: Oustandingly good, though avoid it if you're in any way squeamish or strait-laced.

aulsmith: Ballard is always weird. If you don't like weird, you can skip it.

ahef1963: This one looks weird.

bluepiano : I found it unreadably tedious & maddeningly pointless, but a lot of people hold it in very high regard so it might be to your taste.

bluepiano: For me it was enjoyable if forgettable. If you find yourself reading a lot of straightforward conventional books, this would make a good break from them.

aulsmith : I found another book by her too dark for my tastes and I haven't been back

bluepiano: Worth a read.

aulsmith : This is an important book, but it didn't grab me when I first tried it and I've never gone back to it.

aulsmith : If you haven't read much Heinlein, I wouldn't start here.
