Well I just realized it's May 1st and I also just finished The Red Tent. I highly recommend it to any fans of historical fiction: beautiful, vivid writing and a fresh look at a very old story.

Next up for me is Tears of the Giraffe which is book 2 of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. :)

Modifié : Mai 1, 2009, 11:36 am

el, we saw an episode of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency show on HBO a couple of weekends ago and it was really cute; I think I have the first book somewhere and may need to pick it up :)

I'm reading Lamplighter, the second book in the Monster Blood Tattoo series by D.M. Cornish, I've started The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, and I read the first couple of stories in The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Roald Dahl. This is just the fun stuff, not the school stuff :)

#2 - I don't get HBO but the series looks really neat! I'm hoping it will be available on DVD (like most HBO stuff) after the first season. I read the first book about a year ago and I really liked it but I'm just now getting around to book 2!

I just read Neverwhere I must say I am late to the Gaiman appreciation club but I enjoy his work immensely and I finished The Old Man and Me which was my early reviewer book and I finally reviewed it here http://www.librarything.com/work/1352042/reviews/43946255

I am still reading Novel on Yellow Paper and Fish, Flesh and Good Red Herring

Huzzah laia for fun reading!

#2&3 I am hoping to finding on DVD later too el. It looks like a great series.

OK, I gave up on The Eustace Diamonds, I know, I know, it's Trollope, but it's boring me to tears. I started The Book Thief last night.

Mai 1, 2009, 1:14 pm

I finished Secret Holocaust Diaries today, which was my ER book from last time but I haven't reviewed it yet. Still gathering thoughts. I am glad to have read it but amazed and appalled in new ways at the Holocaust itself. I've never read much about what went on with the Russian side. Wow. Nonna herself was an amazing woman.

I'll be finished with History of Now soon and have started my reread of HPB.

Mai 1, 2009, 1:19 pm

I'm not getting much reading done. When we were watching Grey's last night my 20-year-old sister begged for candy and since there was none I tossed my book at her. I'm still reading Chocolat.

8kgriffith
Mai 1, 2009, 1:22 pm

Lefty, I'm not sure I can read Secret Holocaust Diaries on the heels on The Book Thief; there's only so much genocide I can take at once... But I'm glad to hear that it was a worthwhile read (it sounds like?)... I've had some rotten luck choosing readable ERs.

#7 - KIK! If you like Chocolat you should read Girl with no Shadow as well!

10lefty33
Mai 1, 2009, 3:19 pm

#8 Laia, the book would definitely come harder having just read Book Thief. Perhaps cheer yourself back up with something else first before you consider that one. But it was indeed a worthwhile read. ERs can certainly be hit-or-miss.

#7 K, kik -- perfect reaction!

Just finished Here Lies the Librarian. It was very good. I like it when a story is set so well in its historical setting, you want to look up the facts to see who was real.

I can't start another book until I finish with the weekend's activities. Sigh.

#17 July 17.

Despite some odd stylistic affectations, I'm really enjoying The Book Thief. OK, well, enjoying is probably the wrong word. Appreciating is more accurate.

I just read Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Meh. Before that, I finished The Gollywhopper Games, which I liked a lot better. Not sure what's next. I want to do some cleaning this evening, so I'm going to hold off on starting another book just now.

I'm still listening to Chamber of Secrets in the car.

21catbastet
Mai 3, 2009, 7:48 pm

Yesterday I finished Enter Three Witches, which was really good! It is the story of Macbeth, told from different perspectives of minor characters. A couple of the characters were from the play, but most were made up by the author. At the beginning of every section there was a line from the play that fit into the section. I think it was done really well!

23kgriffith
Mai 3, 2009, 9:00 pm

Littlegeek, I think the stylistic affectations may be what had me swooning as I read The Book Thief ;) The metaphors are really what got me, as well as the way he sometimes uses word order to really make you sit up and think about the moment he's relating.

24littlegeek
Mai 3, 2009, 9:52 pm

Laia, the affectations that bug me are the use of sentence fragments. As sentences. For emphasis.

Especially when you make them.

Separate paragraphs.

Nazi Germany is quite dramatic enough on its own; it doesn't require all those pauses.

However, I like metaphor.

#19 Pico, I really liked Dragon Rider. One of my favorite parts was the different fantastical creatures Funke incorporated into the story. I just really enjoy Funke's writing. It tends to feel so innocent.

#20 Foggi, I love the Wimpy Kid books because they are just exactly like my youngest brother (Matt). My other brother (Mike) read them and found them hysterical for the same reason. Otherwise, I can understand not loving it.

#24 LG, kik! Excellent point! But I liked the way it was written. It gave Death a different-than-normal voice.

#25 Nwing, it is only natural to want to reread/rewatch anything HP! :)

*snort*

LG, I didn't notice that so much; probably my eyes grabbed all of the words at once and I didn't think about it as actual time elapsed between the phrases.
I have to re-read this sometime because I feel like I wasn't paying close enough attention to the writing itself at the start, and that it was only about a third of the way through that I disengaged my "story reading" brain and engaged my "literary analysis" brain. It's nice to have a reason to do that with modern writing!

I'm this close { } to finishing City of Glass. I just couldn't stay awake last night to finish the last few pages. I'll probably pick up Harry, a History next. I'm already 1/2 way through, since I've been reading a little here and there.

#28 I think he might be channelling Vonnegut (not Shatner, MrA) as a shoutout to Slaughterhouse Five. In Vonnegut it works for me, not so much here. Just a taste thing, perhaps.
And so it goes.

Vonnegut has a lot to answer for, imho.

Add me to the list talking about The Last Olympian. My 15 year old has holed up in her bedroom and is fully engrossed. No point talking to her - she is deep into the story.

I'm almost done listening to Chamber of Secrets -- I'm at the fight with the basilisk now, and it's making it very hard for me to get to places on time, as I find myself sitting in the car, just listening, after I finish driving.

I'm trying to finish up Harry, A History, so as to be able to better participate in the book discussion. I read a few pages before bed last night, but I find that it's not good bedtime reading.

Other than that, I'm sort of between books -- looking at Pandora Gets Jealous, but not inspired to read it really, and at The Forest of Hands and Teeth, but I think that may be darker than I want right now. Hmmmmmm. . . . There are a lot of books I've been wanting to reread, too, so perhaps I'll pick up one of those.

Finished Hello, My Name is Mommy yesterday afternoon, and while it wasn't as funny as I'd hoped it would be, it did help me realize that in learning how to parents, mistakes will be made and our choices criticized, but in all likelihood, whatever it is we do (within reason, obviously) will not doom our child or our family. Somehow I already knew this, but needed the "true confessions" of someone else to help me be at peace with it.

#97 - LOL! That sort of reminds me of when I checked out a new book (a Carol O'Connell mystery novel) at my library and they put a sticker on the spines that says "HOT", meaning they have a shorter circulation period since they're high demand. Someone on the train snootily asked if I was a big fan of romance novels.

I finished - and quite enjoyed - Forget About It! Now I'm reading an ARC of The physick book of Deliverance Dane which has a great premise and intriguing plot, but I'm sort of slogging through it. Hopefully it will pick up soon.

What I want to be reading today is the new John Stanford prey novel that just came out. But, alas, I didn't realize it was coming out and did not make room in my budget or get on the list at the library. Hopefully HPB will get one in I can snag soon!

#97: I can't imagine how i respond if someone actually said "Is that a magician's book?".

maybe "Yes it is! Hey, watch me pull a rabbit out of this hat!"

102LadyN
Mai 14, 2009, 6:46 am

#101- I know! When she first said it, I think I just gave her a weird look. That probably helped... I then launched into a long explanation about how it was just a normal novel, and that the author's other novels also have coloured-edged pages, etc, etc... I then realised that I didn't need to justify my book to randoms on a train, even if it was a magician's book!!!

So, back to the topic (I know, how pedestrian), I finished Fool's Fate (which was awesome, all of you who have not really must read Robin Hobb's Six Duchies books, they are among the best fantasy ever) and I started The Language of Bees. Laurie R. King is great, plus, she lives near me.

#111: I know! The casting looks amazing. But I'm wondering why the casted the guy they did for Grover (since he doesn't fit the description of Grover at all) and if the movie will be just the first book (the only one I have read) or the whole series since the movie is called Percy Jackson and not Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

113catbastet

#111 -- I knew it was coming, but I hadn't looked at the IMDB page yet. Looks interesting . . . I don't see Dionysus cast yet. Usually, when I am reading a book, I don't try to think who should play such-and-such, but in my head, Dionysus is always played by Danny DeVito.

On a somewhat related note I just wrote my review of my ER, I won't link it, it's pretty negative. I found it interesting though that when I was on the book's page and clicked the "will you like it" button, LT said it thought I "Probably won't like" it. I guess there are some pretty major differences in the two algorithms!

138biblioholic29
Mai 20, 2009, 11:31 am

The Other Boleyn Girl is the only one in that series that seems to be acknowledged by all as pretty good. The rest of the series is pretty controversial, the Historical Fiction group has an ongoing thread about Philippa Gregory that's worth a read. Personally, I liked The Boleyn Inheritance and The Queen's Fool but was not a big fan of The Constant Princess or The Virgin Queen. To each his own, and if you do like TOBG, I'd recommend checking one or two more out of the library.

#141 laia:
I'll eagerly wait for your review. So far I've only read just the one book by her, Fingersmith.

My 20-year-old sister sat across the room from me on day, asked what I was reading, and I mistakenly told her I was reading nonfiction. "Nonfiction? That doesn't sound right!" (She's pushing the Sookie Stackhouse books on three people right now.) So I've been reading Living Dead in Dallas alongside Harry, A History. Admittedly the first of the two is finished but I'm glued to the HP one and it's so good! The discussion thread is taunting me. She's got to keep it interesting I guess.

I'm thinking perhaps she's trying to create her own Pride and Prejudice and Zombies...after all BJD is a modern P&P more or less...

I just read In the Serpent's Coils, By Venom's Sweet Sting, and Point Blank. I'm feeling very pleased with myself, because I've gotten my brother interested in the Alex Rider series. If you knew him, you'd know just how hard it is to find books for him that he will willingly pick and read. As opposed to, you know, shackling him to the book or something like that.

Bib and I were just commenting about that over on my blog post - I don't think my sister is a reader, and I feel kinda bad for not being around to read to/with her to get her into books when she was younger. Congrats on finding a winner for your brother! :)

Thanks! JP and I are always looking for things he might like, but it's always hit or miss. Luckily, spies seem to be a hit.

Comski, its a re-read! I love BJD (and the movie). I got into a convo in London with someone who agreed with me that The Edge of Reason is funnier. And that they completely left out the best parts for the movie. It sucked big time.

200--> Yes, yes, yes, get it, Bella. I really enjoyed it.

Bib, Its always like that for me. I just pick stuff up randomly. Its nice to cleanse the palete (sp?). I can't wait to read PnP&Z what a brilliant thing. Ref Modern PnP: its one of the elements I love most in the series. The Edge of reason has elements of Persuasion in it.

206--> my sis is like that too. She wouldn't be caught dead with a book. I'm not even sure that she can read. *scratches head*

208: Suge *Bridget Jones Edge of Reason Spoilers* The best part was when she interviewed Colin Firth, but that would have been kind of hard since he was playing Mark Darcy in the movie! I think the DVD did have an extra where "Bridget" interviews "Colin." /spoiler

#209: Yes, the DVD does have it as an extra and it is indeed hilarious. And by the time they were filming the movie, there were more wet shirt movies to reference than when the book was written. :)

I just finished my er, The Secret Holocaust Diaries it was an interesting read, not a viewpoint I am used to. I am fascinated by the Holocaust, have been since I was 12 and picked up a copy of The Diary of Anne Frank. A co-worker of mine had an extra copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell he said if I enjoyed HP I would like it. I'm not very far into yet, but I'll let ya'll know what I think.

I had to make a trip to the mall today so I stopped by Waldenbooks, and was delighted to see boxes of clearance books for $1 each, so I picked up 5 of them that looked interesting.

As I type I am listening to a recording of HBP.

I took What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew and Eats, Shoots, and Leaves along in the car when we drove up to see my daughter. Both are good for browsing through, which was what I needed. It's been a rough couple of days.

I decided to do comfort rereads until the end of school. Too much going on to get into a new book. I recently finished Farmer Boy and have moved on to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

I got a new toy (iPod Nano) and have been listening to my very first audio book ( Tale of Two Cities ). I read it a million years ago in high school, but thought it might we worth a re-read/listen.

We almost bought one of the copies of Eat This, Not That. We didn't because it was a fast food version. The supermarket one would be interesting.

Glad you're enjoying the book. Like LG and laia, I loved it.

Let me know what you think of The Strain!

Since Tuesday I've read Club Dead, Dead to the World, Dead as a Doornail, and Definitely Dead. Those books are addicting. I really couldn't afford to buy the next two, but did today anyways. I will pretend the hardcover one, book nine, doesn't exist.
