The Fourth Labour of Hercules
Eurystheus was disappointed that Hercules had overcome yet another creature and was humiliated by the Hind's escape, so he assigned Hercules another dangerous task. By some accounts, the fourth labour was to bring the fearsome Erymanthian Boar back to Eurystheus alive (there is no single definitive telling of the labors). On the way to Mount Erymanthos where the Boar lived, Hercules visited Pholus ("caveman"), a kind and hospitable centaur and old friend. Hercules ate with Pholus in his cavern (though the centaur devoured his meat raw) and asked for wine. Pholus had only one jar of wine, a gift from Dionysus to all the centaurs on Mount Erymanthos. Hercules convinced him to open it, and the smell attracted the other centaurs. They did not understand that wine needs to be tempered with water, became drunk, and attacked Hercules. Hercules shot at them with his poisonous arrows, killing many, and the centaurs retreated all the way to Chiron's cave.
Pholus was curious why the arrows caused so much death. He picked one up but dropped it, and the arrow stabbed his foot, poisoning him. One version states that a stray arrow hit Chiron as well; Chiron was immortal, but he still felt the pain. Chiron's pain was so great that he volunteered to give up his immortality and take the place of Prometheus, who had been chained to the top of a mountain to have his liver eaten daily by an eagle, although he was an immortal Titan. Prometheus' torturer, the eagle, continued its torture on Chiron, so Hercules shot it dead with an arrow. It is generally accepted that the tale was meant to show Hercules as being the recipient of Chiron's surrendered immortality. However, this tale contradicts the fact that Chiron later taught Achilles. The tale of the Centaurs sometimes appears in other parts of the twelve labours, as does the freeing of Prometheus.
Hercules had visited Chiron to gain advice on how to catch the Boar, and Chiron had told him to drive it into thick snow, which sets this Labour in mid-winter. Hercules caught the Boar, bound it, and carried it back to Eurystheus, who was frightened of it and ducked down in his half-buried storage pithos, begging Hercules to get rid of the beast.
We continue to be as successful as Hercules with our labors to dig out ROOTS! We are through the first quarter of the year and are looking to reach our goal for the third year! Great job everyone! Remember if you haven't completed at least one ROOT by the end of June, your goal will be shift to a separate list. Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2017 and how many books they read by the end of March.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.
So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

The goal for April is 1,178 I know the weather is starting to improve so take your book for a walk in the fresh air! Just 254 books is about 2 or 3 books a piece.
Wouldn't it be great if everyone read at least one ROOT in April?
2Jackie_K
I finished my first ROOT for April (#14 overall), Amy Liptrot's The Outrun, which I'm pretty sure is going to be my book of the year. It was wonderful, I'd give it loads more than 5 stars if I could. An extraordinary book.
All tickers updated.
I'm so close to my goal, I'm considering increasing it. Last year I donated lots of books to the group total after reaching my very low goal, and could do that again. But I think I could do with the challenge of increasing it. I'll let you know what I decide...

I just started my first ROOT for April, a shared read of Santorini with harrygbutler. :)

I failed to report a ROOT last month so my first this month is Up A Road Slowly by Irene Hunt. I read it for the awards CAT, its been on my bookshelf more than awhile.
6Robertgreaves
Two stars! Yay me.
Thank you for all your efforts on behalf of the group, Chèli.

>4 clue: ooh, Irene Hunt! I've read three of her books, and they all were excellent.
8floremolla
I could probably increase my target. I started conservatively because I'd no idea how many I'd read per month. Will look at revising at the end of this month if I'm keeping up the pace and not seduced by the new books creeping in...
9Jackie_K
Right, I might regret this, but I am going to change my goal. So far this year I have read at least 4 books per month, and I'm hopeful that that can continue. I've set low goals the last couple of years in case I pull out a chunkster from my Jar of Fate, but I've found that poly-reading several books at once means that I can make a chunkster last for ages and get through it like the tortoise in the Hare and the Tortoise tale, but still have short reads too to add to my overall totals. Therefore I've made the decision to increase my goal to 48 (4 books per month), and my little personal goal will be to be able to donate at least a couple to the group total by the end of the year. So most of my stars will disappear, but I think this will be more realistic and challenging for me.
I hope that's not too much of a pain to adjust everything, cheli! I'm off to change my tickers now.

Thanks for doing the numbers, Chèli. And thanks for those stories about Herakles, sorry, Hercules (he was Greek and I've always known him by his Greek name). I'm still pondering about increasing my goal, as I am so far ahead of where I thought I would be...

First ROOT of the month for me, although it's an audiobook I started at the beginning of March. His Excellency: George Washington by Joseph J. Ellis. My ticker's updated, too.
15floremolla
>11 fuzzi: good advice, I'll increase it to 40 which is an extra 15 books. I'm getting a good run at reading just now but things might change as the year progresses. Good, I'm looking forward to clearing more ROOTs.
17enemyanniemae
I love the mythology as well- thank you so much for all you do, Cheli.
I got my first ROOT for April. Margery Allingham's The Black Dudley Murder was great fun and introduced a bumbling character with quite an air of mystery. I look forward to reading more about Albert Campion.

I finished my first ROOT for April, Habsburgs verkaufte Töchter which has me itching to get to a few other biographies on the shelf. I have therefore decided to increase my target to 40, which is a more realistic number of what I am actually going to read this year. Being on LT is such a great motivation!
Chèli, I hope this doesn't make too much work for you! I have updated my own ticker accordingly.

Finished my first ROOT of April: Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie. My personal ticker and the group tickers have been updated.

I really liked the Ancillary Justice series. I think the second book in the series may be the best one and that is highly unusual for a series to have the second book be the best.

Looks like everyone did great ROOTing in March. Keep it up everybody. I hope to get to lots more ROOTs and gain an extra star for April.

@ Chèli: I'm sure I did not update the tickers with my ROOTs read in March. Do I need to do that now, or did you do the Math on that?

two more ROOTs completed for April - Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises and The Remains of the Day - that's 4 so far for April, 19/40 total for 2017. All tickers updated.

My first for April - The Immortal Irishman by Timothy Egan. I really enjoy Egan and this one was no exception. This was one of those 'shallow ROOTS' that I just acquired last fall at a book signing when this book was released.
46knotbox
Cheli, I'm really glad this group exists. :) It's motivating to see everybody else working on their ROOTs.
I will say though, that I'm not sure my ticker is updating correctly, but I forgot about six (6!) ROOTs I read before I joined the group in January. So no matter what my ticker now says, I'm at 1 ROOT for April. ;)

Five ROOTs for April so far ... catching up after my work-induced March drought (well, I'm blaming it on work ... which sent me to London ... which meant I had to stop at Foyles and the St Pancras Hatchards bookshops ... where of course I had to buy stuff!):
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld (Owned since 2015)
A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers (Owned since 2016)
Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb (Owned since 2015)
A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony (Owned since 2016)
The Book Thief by Markus Zuzak (Owned since 2008)
All tickers updated (but lagging a bit so doesn't show in the thread yet)

I finished book two in the Fashion Love Affair series. This one was Jackie and Cassini: A Fashion Love Affair by Lauren Marino. This one had more text than the first book in the series. The text added to the content of this little coffee table book. There were some great photos in this volume as well.

I just finished reading The Vanishing by Wendy Webb this afternoon. She's a new author for me.
61benitastrnad
I finished the bizarre Haruki Murakami novel Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. I don't think this will be one of my Murakami favorites, but it was interesting enough for me to keep reading. It is one of his earlier novels and not much like the later ones.
64avidmom
My first ROOT for April (and #4 ROOT) was the beautiful but sad A Monster Calls. I think I'll have more ROOTS to get in before April is through.
65rabbitprincess
My fourth ROOT for April was the somewhat bonkers Spinsters in Jeopardy, by Ngaio Marsh. All tickers (personal and group) have been updated.
66Jackie_K
I've just added my 5th ROOT for April (18th for the year) to both my own and the group tickers.

Three more ROOTs pulled - two paperback and one ebook = 8 for April so far, 25/40 for 2017. One chunkster and one non-fiction still to come hopefully. All tickers updated.

84This-n-That
Completed ROOT #2: From Sand and Ash by Amy Harmon, which will be my last one for April. I updated the group and personal tickers.

#3 completed. If I sat and read all day I might manage one more but that is unlikely. I have returned to the book I was reading at my mother-in-law's bedside while she was dying. I really struggled to engage with it then but of course now I can appreciate why it won a Costa Award and am progressing. Grief is a strange beast....

Hello everyone! First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their condolences on the recent passing of my niece Stephanie in England. Unfortunately, I wasn't as close to her as an adult than I was when she was a child, but the circumstances of her illness and death were just so sad.
She has a husband and two young teenage sons who absolutely adored her, and she had initially been misdiagnosed. She had to struggle to get a second opinion, and even though she had the best doctors in charge of her case after that, I think that the damage had already been done. I guess nobody will ever know that for sure, but that is my opinion, at least.
Anyway, my arthritis is still pretty bad, but slowly getting better. My April reading total was still remarkably low - I read four less ROOTs than last April - but I didn't receive any new books, so I suppose that is a good thing. In keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for this month:
Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 0
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 1
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 0 (yes!)
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 3
I have only dealt with my own personal tickers, never touched the group ones.

I know, Connie. It was absolutely heartbreaking! Not only that, but Stephanie also found out that she was horribly allergic to so many of the chemotherapy drugs that her new doctors wanted to put her on.
I had always known that chemotherapy drugs would tend to make someone sick, even as the drug was killing the cancer, but I never actually thought that anyone could actually have allergies to those same drugs.
