My name is Mamie. 49. Mother of four. Happily married. I am an Indiana transplant currently residing in Georgia. I like to wax poetic about the pecan trees and complain about the heat. I miss winter. I believe in the power of kindness and shared laughter. I heartily embrace wine, snark, and shenanigans; I like to think of them as my posse.

This is my sixth year in the 75ers group. I will read almost anything (Um…NOT self-help), but I tend to lean towards crime fiction, space opera, and historical fiction. I have a soft spot for quirky characters and magical realism.
This group has greatly increased my reading of truth - I love memoirs, travel writing and narrative non-fiction. I am greatly looking forward to another reading year spent amidst the chaos of the 75.

I am planning on walking the cat this year. That is, I am just going to go where my reading takes me. I am not committing to any challenges except for Ellen’s Reread Challenge, which is a perfect match for me because every year I reread multiple books. I love to reread - it’s like getting together with old friends. I like the comfort of knowing where I am going and the surprise of discovering new truths in a familiar landscape.

So some thoughts I have:

It would be nice to read some of the hundreds of books I have sitting on my shelves - especially the authors that I have multiple standalone books by, such as Elmore Leonard, Philip K. Dick, and George Orwell

I want to keep going on some of the series I focused on this past year as well as some that I have neglected for a while: Harry Bosch, Harry Hole, Inspector Montalbano, Bruno Courrèges, Barsetshire, the Vorkosigan Saga, The Others, Sebastian St. Cyr, ...

I would like to eventually read all of the books mentioned in The English Patient, starting with The Histories by Herodotus

Usually I list my print and ebook purchases, but I thought it might be fun to follow my audiobook purchases instead this year. My husband always gets me the 24 credit Audible membership for Christmas, so…

1. Nutshell by Ian McEwan, narrated by Rory Kinnear, Katie's Dirty Dozen 2016
2. The Looking-Glass War by John LeCarré, narrated by Michael Jayston
3. Brat Farrar by Josephine Tey, narrated by Carole Boyd - $2.95 Daily Deal

Every year, LT is an embarrassment of riches for me. I like to keep track of who recommends what and any other pertinent info that lands a book on WL.

2. News of the World by Paulette Jiles - because Mark said so!
3. The Return: Fathers, Sons, and Between by Hisham Matar - memoir -read Rhonda's review on her thread
4. Those Who Hunt the Night by Barbara Hambly - read Roni's blurb on her thread about this series
5. Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin - series recommended by Deborah - read her review of the third book on her thread
6. The Western Lit Survival Kit by Sandra Newman - Joe says this is delightful
7. The Inquisitor's Tale, Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog by Adam Gidwitz - read Anne's review on her thread
8. A World of Love by Elizabeth Bowen - read Meg's review on her thread
9. Under Another Sky by Charlotte Higgins - read Susan's review on her thread, and she said that she heard about it on Jennifer's (inge87) thread
10. He Wants by Alison Moore - read Nancy's review on her thread
11. A Robot in the Garden by Deborah Install - read Caro's review on her thread
12. Full Dark House by Christopher Fowler - read Robin's review of the 13th book in this series
13. A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro - read Faith's review on her thread
14. Moonglow by Michael Chabon - Charlotte talking about reading this on her thread has made me add it to the list, and I was really trying not to...
15. The Assault by Henry Mulisch - read Anita's review on her thread
16. India: A Portrait by Patrick French - read Erik's review on his thread - he says a good look at modern day India

hullo, Mame (for you shall always be affectionately "Mame" to me). just dropped by to cast a pearl knowing it will not be met as by swine:

I'm not trying to pick a quarrel, sir. Hell no. I'm just breaking under the strain of trying to figure out a third way of crossing my legs.

Archie Goodwin The league of frightened men, 1935.

i stumbled on it while looking for something else, viz. Nothing is more admirable than the fortitude with which millionaires tolerate the disadvantages of their wealth. our little Nero in The red box.

wonderful, but vast, image here of the gorgeous illustration for the Red Box that appeared in serialization in American Magazine in 1936.

and now i flit, i float, i fleetly flee, i fly. mwah mwah mwah.

Have a good 'un, m'dear.

Hi Mamie, way back when I was in school I remember the teacher would often show the class an interesting picture and then have us write a story that would fit the image. Looking at your topper, I can imagine that child and dog are waiting for a loved one to arrive home, perhaps a father who's been off serving in the military or a mother who's been away nursing a sick relative. Anyway, happy new thread!

Hi, Mamie! Another late check in for me. Still damp and chilly here, but better than snow and deep freeze.

I did have Norwegian Wood as I found it in a charity shop, but as I said, I gave it to my cousin for Christmas as I felt he'd better appreciate it. I think the only one I'd be inclined to try is After the Quake but as it's £4.99 even on Kindle and there are plenty of other books I know I'd love for that price.......

I like to keep an eye on the Kindle deals throughout the year, Jenny, and then if I see one by an author that we have been talking about like this, I figure it's a sign. Heh.

But you are so right about not feeling badly about it - there are so many books out there, and not every author is for every person.

Love all the Murakami chatter! And hooray for a Murakami Group Read! We may need something like this, just to get folks on board.

I promise you, he is worth it.

LOL! Did you see what I wrote? LMAO.

I meant AUNTIE MAME not Crazy Mamie.

I liked the Rosalind Russell one, too, but the Lucille Ball one I loved and will always have a special place in my heart.

My grandma and I used to watch it all the time. She had the personality of Auntie Mame and just look at her.

Happy Birthday to your dad. Something popped up on my FB the other day, about a person who was really upset because it was her (deceased) Mom's birthday. She came home to find her partner had made a cake complete with a candle. When asked why, he said "Just because she died doesn't mean we can't celebrate that she lived". I'm going to try and remember that when my own dad's birthday (who died when I was a child) comes around again, as well as the other people I miss so painfully.

So..........I hope you've celebrated his life in style. I know how hard it is to miss your Dad. But give him a raised glass all the same.

>154 lunacat: Thank you, Jenny! Yep - I totally agree with that thinking. We have a special day on my Dad's birthday but also on his death day because that one is really hard for me. I feel like I celebrate my Dad every day because he is so much a part of the fabric of who I am, but it's good to have a physical moment with my family, so that they can also celebrate who he was and what he brought to this earth. I cannot make any more tangible memories with him, but I can make tangible memories of him.

We are just about to kick off our memory - we are getting Mexican from a favorite restaurant, brining it home and eating it together while we watch The Big Sleep. My Dad and I shared a love of old movies in general and of Humphrey Bogart in particular. Hw would smile big that we are watching it in his honor.

I am so glad you are still making memories of your dad. How precious.

After more than 10 years apart, my mom has sworn to me that she will come visit me this year, some how. I'm so happy. I'm hoping that she can make it work. I miss her. I mean, we talk together on the phone at least once a week, if not more, but it's not the same.

Jan 22, 2017, 9:51 am

I hate that moment you wake up from a dream about someone who is no longer around. It's like a punch to the gut. I often find it so upsetting that I can't decide if I'd rather never dream of him at all. The trouble is, a lot of my dreams of people are opening doors and discovering it was all a mistake and they're not really dead. I'm so so happy, and then when I wake up, it's not true. Or in the dream, they go again and the grief is intense in the dream and in waking.

Of course, there is also the abject relief when you wake up from a nightmare and realise it's not real. The swings and roundabouts of life.

I hope you had a lovely day making memories.

>162 Morphidae: It's important to me to honor his memory, Morphy, and I think the best way to do that is to actively remember who he was and how his presence in my life has made me the person I am today. I don't want to loose the little stories because I didn't tell them to anyone.

I hope that your mom honors her promise - I'll be praying for that and keeping you both in my thoughts.

>163 lunacat: It is, Jenny, but it is also a gift because in our dreams we get to be with them again. On the other hand, I have never had a dream where the death was a mistake, and so they are really alive - that would be devastating to awake to the fact that it was not real. The dream world is so tricky - what bothers me is when you dream about something or someone that you haven't even thought about in years, and then suddenly there it is. Not necessarily upsetting, but it always feels so weird. I guess everything that you have experienced in life is in there somewhere, on the back burner.

>177 Morphidae: Good to know, Morphy. Hoping she can make it this year.

>178 sibylline: I adore Elmore Leonard, Lucy. He created such great characters, the dialogue rings true every time, and I love the humor that is always a part of his books.

The End of the Affair was narrated by Colin Firth, who did a really fabulous job of it. I was surprised by how sad and slow the story was - I read that it was based on real events in Greene's life, and that it was one of his "Catholic novels". The only other thing I have read by him was Our Man in Havana, and that is so very different.

>179 BLBera: Thank you, Beth! I really liked Going After Cacciato - and I might increase my rating a bit once I have finished mulling it over. My main complaint is that it was a bit too long and the writing could have been tighter in places. It suffers from my having read The Things They Carried first, unfortunately. I really loved that one. That being said, Going After Cacciato was totally worth my time, and I love the way that O'Brien weaves magical realism into the story.

Hey, Mamie!

Some wicked storms around here yesterday, about 100 or so miles from you. Windy, dark, floods of rain.

I love Murakami, and oddly started with Wind-Up Bird, not an easy book by any means, but quite rewarding.

I love Graham Greene in all his costumes. A special favorite was The Power and the Glory, a terribly sad (with funny parts) story. I loved The End of the Affairtoo, excellent and so different, as you say.

Have a fabulous week.

I am looking forward to further exploring Murakami. And I am making a note of The Power and the Glory - I have The Unquiet American in the stacks, so that will be my next one by him. I think that more than anything, The End of the Affair just took me by surprise with how melancholy it was, but I loved the introspection and the internal dialogue, and it is one I think I will read again.

One of the great things about Graham Greene is his range. Brighton Rock is a solid thriller; Travels with My Aunt is fun and funny with a serious foundation; The Third Man, The Quiet American are serious, the latter prescient.

Chiming in on Murakami ... I loved Kafka on the Shore (a 5 star favorite). I need to read IQ84 next. Glad to hear that you liked it. For some reason (can't remember now why) I got a little afraid I might not like it. Your nudge gives me courage - lol.

Just popping in quickly to say that all is well at the Pecan Paradisio. We came through the storms just fine, although Georgia itself sustained a lot of damage. We are thankful that we had nothing to report.

A high bit of drama here yesterday as Barnum, our 13 year old toy poodle, fell down some stairs and dislocated his hip. Those of you who have followed my thread for several years might remember that Barnum fell down the stairs two years ago and had to have major surgery on his right hip. This time it was his left hip - the vet was able to put his hip back in place and the x-ray revealed that he might also have a hairline fracture on his ilium. They gave him pain meds, and we brought him home, but this morning he woke up screaming and would not put any weight on it at all, so back to the vet we went. He's fine, but they did give him stronger pain meds. Poor baby.

Nothing to report on the reading front, as it has been plenty crazy here, but I am hoping to get back to the books today.

Okay. So hopefully today is a return to a more normal pace for us. We had really wonky internet during the storm days, so sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn't - most annoying. Rae and I have been indulging in watching old seasons of The Closer - one of our favorite crime shows, which has been eating up my evenings but in a good way. And I have been trying to get back into the groove with my stepping. So far, so good - it helps that we are having a run of cooler days, which is a most welcome development - of course, when I say cooler, I mean for Georgia, so low 60s and high 50s. I'LL TAKE IT!!

Barnum is not up yet, so I don't know how he;s doing today, but I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your good wishes. The stronger pain meds seemed to do the trick for the rest of yesterday - they pretty much knock him out, which is what he needs to let that swelling and irritation settle down.

On the reading front...*sigh*...I need to get back to it. I am almost half way through A Gentleman in Moscow, which I am still loving, and I am about a third of the way into The Looking Glass War, which I am listening to. The interesting thing to me is that this is the fourth book in LeCarré's George Smiley series, and once again, George Smiley doesn't feature the way you expect him to. Strange but also kind of cool. I am still working on all the other books posted up there in >2 Crazymamie:. Hoping to get to my reread for the month for Ellen's Reread Challenge next - Finding George Orwell in Burma.

Happy Wednesday to all of you!
