Philip Milton Roth was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 19, 1933. He attended Rutgers University for one year before transferring to Bucknell University where he completed a B.A. in English with highest honors in 1954. He received an M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1955. His first book, afficher plus Goodbye, Columbus, received the National Book Award in 1960. His other books include Letting Go, When She Was Good, Portnoy's Complaint, My Life as a Man, The Ghostwriter, Zuckerman Unbound, I Married a Communist, The Plot Against America, The Facts, The Anatomy Lesson, Exit Ghost, Deception, Nemesis, Everyman, Indignation, and The Humbling. He won the National Book Critic Circle Awards in 1987 for his novel The Counterlife and in 1992 for his memoir Patrimony: A True Story. He won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1993 for Operation Shylock: A Confession and in 2001 for The Human Stain, the National Book Award in 1995 for Sabbath's Theater, and the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for American Pastoral. Strong, intelligent man from a colored family, does not want to life as a black in the US of the 50-ies. looking nearly like a white he decides to deny his past and become a white professor at a white university. but it seems, that he cannot run away from his past. He looses job, white wife and children. and his life, beeing in love with a much younger Woman. The book has very strong parts, and some weak. but in all worthy to be read, cause part of US history. segregation and Vietam war.
Ce roman propose une uchronie très intéressante, plaçant la question de l'antisémitisme au cœur des États-Unis, pendant le seconde guerre mondiale. L'auteur a choisi de raconter son histoire à travers les yeux d'un enfant de neuf ans. Ainsi, la situation paraît moins dramatique et l'atmosphère générale n'est pas trop pesante. Il parvient très vite à nous faire entrer dans sa famille et à rendre la vie en son sain des plus intéressante. Le côté presque historique permet de se rendre compte que parfois, le sort du monde dépend de moments charnières et qu'il en faut peu pour que tout puisse basculer. Un livre très intéressant, parfois passionnant, mais avec une fin un peu en demi-teinte, l'auteur stoppant presque net en fin de l'année 1942 sa chronique familiale et ne donnant qu'un bref résumé concernant la fin de la guerre trois années plus tard.… (plus d'informations)

Solitaire incapable de cohabiter avec quiconque, le héros de Roth quitte sa retraite campagnarde des Berkshires pour revenir à New York où il n'a pas mis les pieds depuis onze ans. Incontinent après une opération de la prostate, Zuckerman doit porter un caleçon en plastique afin de ne pas souiller son pantalon. A l'hôpital où il consulte, le voici qui recroise Amy dont il a fait la connaissance en 1956 et qui lutte aujourd'hui contre un cancer du cerveau. En pleine campagne électorale opposant George W. Bush à John Kerry, le septuagénaire rencontre également un jeune couple d'écrivains qui cherchent à troquer leur appartement contre une adresse en Nouvelle-Angleterre. Séducteur inoxydable, Zuckerman a bien du mal à résister à la brune et pulpeuse Jamie !
