This wasn't a book I knew much about beyond its title before I picked it up. Following brother and sister Tom and Maggie Tolliver through a happy childhood and family disaster where their father loses a lawsuit and with the costs, the mill he's run after his father and all his lands. Maggie adores Tom, but they are very different from each other, and he always ends up seeing the worst in her when they grow up. He successfully becomes a respected man, she's more independent-minded and struggles against the conventions of their community. Maggie kept me engaged all the way through this book, which felt a bit slow going at times. Pretty grim. Pretty grim. I did enjoy the author's wry commentary throughout. The first third was very slow and uninteresting as George Eliot took time to develop the characters. In hindsight, this helps you savour key moments. For example, Mrs. Glegg's support of Maggie and Mrs. Tulliver's loyalty towards her daughter. These were quite unexpected at first glance but Mrs. Glegg has always been righteous and Mrs. Tulliver has always put her family first. Maggie also had the unyielding love and faithfulness of Philip Wakem. What a love letter he wrote her! Of note is Eliot's masterly depiction of family relationships - the tension between love and self-interest. Witness the self-justifications of Mrs. Tulliver's family when she needed help; help they will but not at too much expense. This book was good, but slow. This will mark my fourth George Eliot novel. You can say now that I'm a fan of her writing. I liked the sister/brother relationship, although it ends bittersweet. One thing I learned for Eliot's books already is don't expect a happy ending. With all that said, I think I read this book at a perfect time. I wasn't looking for something quick, fun, or happy. I wouldn't say this is a hard book to read, just slow and you need to take you time.
