(Sir)Thomas is travelling through time and space in 2024 - Part 2

New month new thread - Welcome to Part 2!

One of my favourite places (with my favourite book), which I will leave tomorrow morning for another favourite place, we are going to the North Sea.
I posted a few pictures in the previous thread, there will certainly be some from 2024 soon...

Hi everybody, my Name is Thomas, I am 62 years young and I live in a small town in northern Baden Wuerttemberg, Germany.
My librarything name comes from my study time, a friend and I wrote short crime novels in which the other was the role model for the investigator. My friend called me Sir Thomas.
We would read them to the others in the dormitory, it was a great time, even though I wasn't very talented.
2023 was again a good reading year since I am part of this group - 188 finished books.
This is my 12th year in this awesome group, and every year is going better and better with books and friends.
My library grows and grows, as I can hardly bring myself to throw away a book - it's a good thing that eBooks hardly take up any space on the shelf...

Saki was fun, not work ;-)
The first day of our holiday was a good one.
We got up at 3:00 a.m. and had a good travel.
We arrived at 3:30 p.m. at the apartment, unpacked and went out for a delicious meal.
More details may follow later.
We went to bed early in the evening.
We slept well and had a leisurely breakfast.
The weather is a bit gray and cold, but that doesn't matter, now it's time for our first walk on the beach.

A young widow opens a bookshop in a small town.

Yes it's great, yesterday we went for a long walk on the beach and ate in a bistro on the beach (with heating), my wife had tuna tartare, I had a delicious burger, then warm chocolate cake and creme brulee, the pictures didn't turn out so well, but there will certainly be some again soon.
The sun is there, but the clouds can enjoy it more than we can.
It doesn't rain and the sun shines from time to time, and we have the sun in our hearts - everything is wonderful.
When you go to the North Sea at this time of year, you have to expect everything
A few years ago it looked like this:

Tom, I very much like learning of your travel excursions. That is one of the things I miss the most about not having Will in my life. It will be five years in April since he's passed and lately I'm thinking of the lovely trips we had. We very much enjoyed traveling with his cousin and her partner. We always got along, with no tension. I do miss those days, even if it was an ice cream cone by the sea, or a glass of wine at a local tavern.

Please keep sharing you trips. I very much appreciate the photos, the menu, and your impressions.

Today we had a wonderful day, first we drove to the northern tip of the island:

Afterwards we had a delicious meal:

We shared scallops au gratin, then my wife had a pizza and I had rack of lamb with baked potato.

German title translated: Dementic, but not stupid
Genre: Non Fiction
Reading Reason: training course
Medium: Paper Book

The author runs a home for dementia sufferers and describes what good care for those with the disease looks like.
As we have to deal with this topic in our family and acquaintances, we took part in an online course in which this book was mentioned.
Very interesting with food for thought.

Today we have our favorite dish, fresh North Sea crabs with scrambled eggs.
Accompanied by a (purchased) coctail sauce. The black dots are fermented peppercorns.
At the morning we went to the weekly market, there is a fisherman here who still shells the crabs himself. Normally the crabs are caught here, frozen and driven to Morocco where they are shelled. Then they are driven back to the North Sea coast where they are sold.
The taste of the crabs without the "vacation trip" is a thousand times better! They are a little more expensive, but it's worth it.

The picture is not very good, but that does not matter, the original is delicious!

And tomorrow we'll have the same - delicious!

German title translated: Life and Death in the Uncle Sam Hotel
Genre: Short Stories
Reading Reason: Birthday / Death anniversary of the author
Medium: eBook
First published: 1981

Yesterday was the anniversary of the author's death, a reason to read something by him.
The stories are sexist, crude, dirty, powerful and somehow poetic.
Would the stories be published in today's soft-spoken times? If so, then only with a warning...

The story is not finished and seems to be the beginning of a longer novel...

Julie by Lauren Salas
A separation can have painful consequences.

39. Barbara stirbt nicht by Alina Bronsky

German title translated: Barbara Isn't Dying
English Title: Barbara Isn't Dying
Genre: Fiction
Reading Reason: Group read in my hometown
Medium: Paper Book
First published: 2023

Every year a book is read together in my town, the author comes to the launch event himself and there are lots of reading circles.
Mr Schmidt is a stubborn and narrow-minded man. When his wife is no longer able to get up and look after him after 52 years of marriage, his life changes completely.
Much is left unsaid, but becomes clear in the subtext.
I didn't like this book quite as much as the previous ones, but it is worth reading.
I'm already looking forward to the discussions in the reading groups.

40. Eine kurze Geschichte der böhmischen Raumfahrt / Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar

German title translated: A brief history of Bohemian space travel
Genre: Science Fiction
Reading Reason: Movie review
Medium: eBook
First published: 2017

A space traveller is sent to explore a dust cloud between Venus and Earth.
One day he receives a visit from an alien in the shape of a spider, or is it just a hallucination caused by loneliness?
The main content is not the alien, but the story of Jakub Procházka.
How does a person become who he is now?
Not a classic SF novel, sometimes a little grotesque, but with food for thought, but nevertheless exciting.

Afterwards there was champagne and a book signing.

German title translated: Mindful killing through conscious nutrition
Genre: Crime Fiction
Reading Reason: Author
Medium: Paper Book

Björn Diemel has put on a lot of weight and when his daughter is kidnapped at the zoo, he can barely keep up with the kidnappers.
This makes him think about his diet. These reflections also lead to the solution of his other problems.

She has no choice but to solve the murder herself. But the only person she can see is her neighbour, who only has a week to live. Unfortunately, Miriam waged a merciless petty war against her while she was alive, thinking she had run over her cat.

Contact with the Trisolarians has deeply unsettled humanity, and the blockade of basic scientific research is also becoming more and more of a problem. Likewise the fact that all storage media are open to the Sophons.
How is humanity supposed to protect itself against the approaching fleet?
The only thing they can't do is read minds, so a desperate project is launched in which individuals are supposed to hatch plans and not let anyone in on it...
Scientifically sound with quiet phases and phases full of action.
There are new protagonists, but also old acquaintances.
I found the second volume even better than the first.

This weekend was a busy one.
On Friday afternoon we started cleaning our patio tiles, which kept us busy on Saturday. I did it by hand, as a pressure washer would put too much strain on the tiles. The windbreak and the awning rails are also spotlessly clean now.
On Sunday, we visited our neighbour in hospital, but she will soon be back home, unfortunately in a nursing home. She can no longer look after herself. Apart from that, we enjoyed our clean sun terrace.

German title translated: The Book of Phobias and Manias
Genre: Non Fiction
Reading Reason: Rummage at the library
Medium: eBook
First published: 2022
Pages: 404

A list of 99 phobias and manias.
Unfortunately, I was already bored after the introduction, maybe it's just me, who knows?
I had the impression that the book should be on the market while COVID-19 is still current.
I'm counting it as I've started it and I'll reach the magic 75 without it, but I gave up in the first quarter and didn't read any further. Life is too short for bad books.

German title translated: Zorn, Death and Rain
Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: Reading Reason: BB Club Read (Thank you again, Barbara (Ameise1))

A city in eastern Germany in constant rain.
Claudius Zorn is a policeman who hates his job, he is grumpy and lazy.
When a pool of blood is found without a body, he reluctantly starts investigating.
His partner Schröder is short, obese and enjoys his work.
He also has many talents that you wouldn't expect him to have (a bit of a cliché, but what the heck).
When the public prosecutor appears to be obstructing the investigation, Zorn's zeal is aroused, but his opponent is much more cunning than they realise...
A series that I will certainly continue...

I love wasabi - and pickled ginger too.
The cookery course was great, we learned a lot, now our inside-out rolls should also be a success...
The teacher is Japanese and used to have a restaurant in Japan. She has now lived in Germany for some time.
We were 9 participants spread over 4 cooking stations. Everyone had slightly different ingredients. I wouldn't have thought that you could make delicious sushi with fried minced meat.
We spent the last hour together eating the delicacies.

The rest of the week was also pleasant.
On Wednesday, I treated myself to a one-hour wellness oil massage after work, which was very pleasant and relaxing.
Yesterday I finished work a little early and took advantage of the sunny spring weather to play a round of golf, only the second time this year. It was beautiful outside and I even played quite well.
The picture is not from this year, but it was just as nice ;-)

Yesterday I went golfing in the morning and didn't do too badly, at lunchtime we had our first barbecue of the year.
In the afternoon we played Scrabble on our balcony.

Hello Tom.

Reading your thread and cathching up on all the intriguing horror books you read. There are a lot of books I'm tempted to add to my April list of books to read.

I very much like the idea of an author coming to where you live and reading his book.

Happy Spring to you. I very much like the photo you posted of green small hills. You noted it wasn't current, but added it, and I'm glad you did because it was so cherry and springlike.

All good wishes to you.

The picture was very similar to the view I had so I thought I could reuse it, I am pleased that you like it.

Yesterday evening we had a reading by Birgit Mattausch, she read from her book Bis wir Wald werden. It was wonderful, the local bookseller moderated and asked questions, Mrs Mattausch read from the book and answered the questions. In between there was piano music.
I already loved the book beforehand, but the reading by the author and some background information made it even better.
Perhaps I should "read" an audio book more often after all...

All the best to you.

A collection of ten short stories, some are gloomy, some have a silver lining.
They are about about racism, homophobia and misogyny, but it's still fun to read them.

Exciting and thought-provoking and often with an unexpected twist at the end.
I enjoyed reading it.

But her colleagues are more carefree. She is worried because, like many others, she was bitten a few months ago but has no symptoms.
Runaway

The week was eventful:

On Monday evening we went to a lecture.
My wife volunteered as a bereavement counsellor in the hospice association, among other things, and Chris Paul was invited to give a talk on the kaleidoscope of mourning to 150 interested people to mark its 30th anniversary.
She is a great speaker and a good singer. She explained a song to suit each topic and then sang it herself.
It was a wonderful evening.

On Tuesday evening we had a reading circle in the local bookshop. There were slightly fewer of us this time (7 + 2 from the bookshop), but the discussion was more intense and we discovered completely new facets of the book.
I love the idea of the whole town reading the same book and engaging with it in different events.
This time it's Barbara stirbt nicht by Alina Bronsky.

Last night we had online lecture.
My wife on the topic of "Dementia: Farewell processes of relatives", I on the topic of "Digital legacy".
It's a good thing we have two notebooks.
Both presentations were very interesting and we really enjoyed them - even if there was no sparkling wine, as there was on Monday and Tuesday.
But we were invited to celebrate with our neighbour beforehand, she had foot surgery and was allowed to put weight on her foot again yesterday - after 8 weeks. We only had half an hour, but it was enough time for a glass of sparkling wine...

Nothing planned for tonight, finally time to read again.
