She changed her first name because of her preference for it. She was educated at Barnard College, and Columbia University (BA, MFA). She has lived in Nairobi, Bangkok and Belfast, and currently lives in London. Shriver wrote seven novels and published six (one novel could not find a publisher) before writing We Need to Talk About Kevin, which she called her "make or break" novel. She won the 2005 Orange Prize for her eighth published novel, We Need to Talk About Kevin, a thriller and close study of maternal ambivalence, and the role it might have played in the title character's decision to murder nine people at his high school. The book created a lot of controversy, and achieved success through word of mouth. The Mandibles: A Family, 2029-2047 was published in May 2016. Lionel Shriver Lionel Shriver’s breakout international bestseller We Need to Talk About Kevin established her as one of the world’s most provocative and intriguing novelists. A dark and uncompromising look at an ambivalent mother and her ‘bad seed’ son, it was the book that launched a thousand dinner table arguments about nature versus nurture. Her latest book, Big Brother, continues to explore the tension between who we essentially are and what we make of ourselves. And once again, Shriver wades bravely in to murky moral waters, confronting one of our society’s heftiest taboos: weight. Narrator Pandora is horrified when her beloved big brother, Edison, a washed-up jazz musician, arrives to visit – weighing 300 pounds and submerging his feelings of failure in a torrent of food. She decides to sacrifice her marriage to save her brother’s life, moving in with him and immersing themselves in an extreme diet and exercise regime. Big Brother is inspired by the death of Shriver’s older brother in 2009, from obesity-related illness. Although the setting and characters are fictional, and Edison is distinctly different from her real brother, Shriver’s dark humour, frank tone and ability to draw on her deeply personal family tragedy makes Big Brother another book that will be discussed for years to come. Lionel Shriver "Big Brother" The new novel from the Orange Prize-winning author of We Need To Talk About Kevin. When Pandora picks up her older brother Edison at her local Iowa airport, she literally doesn’t recognize him. The once slim, hip New York jazz pianist has gained hundreds of pounds. What happened? Soon Edison’s slovenly habits, appalling diet, and know-it-all monologues are driving Pandora and her fitness-freak husband Fletcher insane. After the brother-in-law has more than overstayed his welcome, Fletcher delivers his wife an ultimatum: it’s him or me.
Rich with Shriver’s distinctive wit and ferocious energy, Big Brother is about fat: why we overeat and whether extreme diets ever really work. It asks just how much sacrifice we’ll make to save single members of our families, and whether it’s ever possible to save loved ones from themselves.

With her gift for psychological portraiture and a knack for skewering timely social phenomena, Shriver's work is "tough, complicated, brilliant," according to The new republic's Ruth Franklin. Shriver is also a respected journalist whose work has appeared in such publications as The Guardian, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. In her new novel, Shriver examines cults of personality and terrorism in an alternate past. The Vanishers Heidi Julavits Heidi Julavits is co-editor of The Believer, a literary magazine she founded with Dave Eggers, which was described by A.O. Scott as part of "a generational struggle against laziness and cynicism, to raise once again the banners of creative enthusiasm and intellectual engagement." Her anti-snark manifesto Rejoice! Believe! Be Strong and Read Hard!, lobbying against mean-spirited book reviews, appeared in the debut issue. She is the author of three novels, including The Uses of Enchantment, about a young girl's faked abduction, and The Mineral Palace, a depression-era story of sexual corruption and infanticide—both New York Times Notable Books. TNBC - The Post-Birthday World Lionel Shriver, La double vie d'Irina.Safe or sexy?
