Rex Ogle writes about his relationship with his abuela over the course of his life growing up experience. His maternal grandmother has a strained relationship with her daughter, Rex's mother. Rex suffers from abuse and neglect from his mom and frequently finds refuge, love, and support from his grandmother.
This calls out to Free Lunch and Punching Bag, but draws the thread of his grandma's influence throughout his life. He longs to escape his life and circumstances. It's traumatic but the brief snippets are powerful, compelling, and shine a light on the importance of having someone love you and always be in your corner.… (plus d'informations)

I love Little Women, and this book managed to give me all the nostalgia feels plus the bonus of having so much of my modern, progressive sensibility.

Harrowing. This is at once a hard and hurtful read, and the best description of falling into homelessness I've read. Ogle is just so good at searing honesty in his writing, and unfortunately has lived a very difficult life. We think at the end of Punching Bag that he's going to a place of safety and all will be well, but that doesn't hold true for long. Knowing that he survives makes it possible to keep reading. Witnessing his hardships makes the fentanyl crisis understandable -- we have this myth that people can work hard enough to lift themselves out of trauma, but the reality is that we're all interconnected and outside help or safety nets are necessary for healing. If those don't exist, escape becomes the only priority. This is an excellent book.

I wanted to love this, but some of the exposition was just so clunky I couldn't get past it. Would a kid really explain the history of their family in a letter to her father? Why? Wasn't he there?

On the flip side, the updating of the classic was pretty well done and I liked a lot of the choices the authors made. I read this super fast and overall enjoyed it.
