vaguely remember a short story about extreme surfing on planets in other solar systems where
planetary alignments causes monsterous waves that travel half way around a planet. The surfers wear environment suits or the "surf board" is like a small ship. I think i read it in the 80's

I'm almost positive I read that story, and the author that popped into my head is Alan Dean Foster, though that may be because of his novel, Dark Star. I will check further and report back...

It was Foster. I'm not home to check my books, but I'm pretty sure it was either in his collection With Friends Like These ... or ... Who Needs Enemies. Happy reading. :-)

Thanks for the confirmation that at least a couple of my brain cells are alive and kickin'. Luckily, I am at home and have access to my books. The story is called "Surfeit" and it's in ...Who Needs Enemies.

Thank you. That is the story i was looking for. I just re-read it. i live on lake Michigan and love and have a respect for the water.
