Both, in a good way, are very "inside baseball" types of books. The essays are in depth, written by academics - who are also TV fans. So if you're looking for a "Access Hollywood" type of book, these aren't for you.
BUT... they are worthwhile and interesting for those who think that television programs deserve in depth analysis.

I enjoyed the Starz Spartacus series, so winning and getting to read this book was really cool. The essays contained in it cover many different themes in the TV show and how Starz has differentiated the story from other mediums (the movies, books, etc...).

I made the mistake of requesting this book as an introduction into the "sword and sandal" film genre. I thought watching as many of the films covered in the book as possible and then reading the essays would serve as a sort of "Peplum 101," if you will.
What I didn't bank on was that there's a reason I've never seen that many Peplum films: I'm just not really that into them. (I did enjoy watching the MST3K versions of the Hercules films though.)
That lack of interest made Of Muscles and Men a bit of a slog for me. The writing is very academic. That's not a complaint, by the way. The scholarly essays on pop-culture I've found in other McFarland publications are why I usually like this publisher and why I thought I'd like this book. Alas, an introduction, it is not. My mistake, entirely.
I actually would recommend this to someone who LOVES sword & sandal epics and cultural studies. I'd love to read more McFarland titles akin to this; I'll probably just stick to genres I'm familiar with.… (plus d'informations)
