Halide Edib was born in Istanbul and educated at the American Girls College. She taught in various capacities from 1903 to 1917 and entered political and cultural affairs during World War I. She was an active participant in the Struggle for National Independence. After a sojourn in England afficher plus (1936--39), Edip returned to Turkey and served as professor of English literature at Istanbul University from 1940 to 1950. She was the first Turkish woman to hold professional rank. From 1950 to 1954 she was a member of the National Assembly. Edib, the outstanding Turkish woman of the twentieth century, is known primarily for her novels and memoirs. Of her 20-odd volumes, the most popular deal with the events of the War for Independence.
