looking for a book that my husband read in 1st or 2nd grade in the early 80s... (but not sure when it was published)

The cover art was an illustration of 3? men dressed in classic motoring gear (goggles, skullcaps, scarves, etc.) riding in a Model T car.

He thinks that the plot had something to do with them having adventures... any help, suggestions, leads, possibilities appreciated!

Well, what pops into my head is Jerome K. Jerome's novels Three Men in a Boat and Three Men on the Bummel, but all the LT covers for them show respectively, three men in a boat of one sort or another, and three men on bicycles. But it's irresistible.

(And if he hasn't read these, maybe he'd like them!)

The first thing that popped into my head was Wind in the Willows. Any chance it's not three men, but three animals, namely, Mr. Toad, Mole and Ratty?

Toad and his roadster(s) are key to many adventures within the plot. There are several covers showing Toad, his friends, and his roadster. Any luck?

ETA: Did some Google Image searches for children's books with antique cars on the cover. Some suggestions:

Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car by John Burningham
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming
Tom Swift and his Electric Runabout by Victor Appleton

Excellent suggestions.

staffordcastle, Three Men on the Bummel looks interesting, but I don't think that's it.

mountebank, it's definitely not Wind in the Willows, but thanks for the other suggestions. Tom Swift and his Electric Runabout looks promising, but is a bit early I think.

Thanks to all for posting!

Artcat, read Three Men in a Boat first - Bummel is the sequel, and, IMO, not quite as good. But the first one is an absolute riot.
