I am learning so much on my second read. At 14 I'm really finding Cleaver had a great deal to say to today's young people.

I do admit, though, that I preferred The Autobiography of Malcom X. I think when I read Soul on Ice I wasn't adult enough to understand how what he had suffered through made him what he was and whether it would turn out OK. The Black Panthers seemed scary at that time. Malcolm X's personal journey away from the Nation of Islam seemed more hopeful (to a naive white teenager) as a model for changing this world peacefully. I have to admit I read them both when I was young and without much experience with people of different backgrounds. I should read them again.

>5 krazy4katz: The Autobiography of Malcolm X is another great one. As were the works of King, books by Stokely Carmichael, and the works of most of the Harlem Renaissance writers.
There's so much history that kids should know if this nation is going to change.

>6 ShayWalker: Absolutely! It would be wonderful if children were taught all of American history!!
