I'm new here so I hope it's ok if I ask for multiple books in one topic. I'm pretty sure I read these both in Junior High which was 2001-2003 and I found them in the school library so I assume they are both intended for teens.

The first book I can't remember very much, but there was a school or something like an apprenticeship and the main guy's name may have started with a "D". I really can't remember much other than I think it was just one novel and had something to do with dreams. Either he could see things in his dreams or maybe even teleport or maybe there was another world he was accessing through his dreams? The title may have had the word dreams in it. And there was something about his mother, she may have been a slave or something I want to say I remember them creeping around a dock and maybe breaking through a glass ceiling to some sort of factory. It was fantasy obviously. And I know it's not The Dream Merchant because I read that later and didn't really like it.

The second book was a series of maybe three or more. I think there was a young girl who lived in a walled city in the middle of the desert. I can't remember why she left, but I think she may have been exiled or was escaping or sent on a mission or something. I think she gets kidnapped by bandits and some of them may have been evil but she falls in love with the bandit leader. I don't remember if they stay with the bandits, but I'm pretty sure they never go back to that city...maybe. I want to say the cover was maybe yellow or orange with a picture of...something. I also want to say I remember something about wolves, but I don't know what. I think the bandit leader had black hair & maybe covered his face.

Sorry for the lack of detailed information, but if anyone has a book that sounds even remotely close please let me know!

The second book sounds like Tanith Lee's Law of the Wolf Tower and its sequels. It's written as a diary by the main character, a girl called Claidi, who has to run away from the walled palace in the desert where she works as a maid. She later meets the bandits and has some adventures with them and yes, falls in love with the leader. There are three sequels, all of which have Wolf in the title.

The first one could be The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones, although the mom was not a slave.

Sakerfalcon ~ That was it! Thank you so much!

SockMonkeyGirl ~ I actually read the first volume of The Chronicles of Chrestomanci recently, but unfortunately it was a different book. Thanks for trying though.

From what I can remember of the book I read in Junior High, the guy wasn't in a modern school. I don't know how to describe it, but it would be more like a school in a typical fantasy novel set in a different world. I think the main guy, a girl, and maybe another guy were the only ones with a particular talent/skill (possibly the dream ability) and I believe in the beginning they are taken to a building in the woods with some sort of relic. I want to say I remember them running away from something in the woods, but again I barely remember it so some of this stuff might not have really happened in the book. If that makes any sense.
