My most favorite illustrator of mice is Jill Barklem, but I am always glad to add more to this particular pile.

My 5-year-old and I are big fans of Laura Numeroff and her If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series. Moon Mouse is also lovely.

I recently purchased Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, and I think it's absolutely adorable. Unfortunately, I think that's the only picture book in my collection that's about mice!

(Though I do own a lot of other mouse kidlit - Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Stewart Little, The Rescuers...)

I own many more picture books of bigger animals, such as bears, tigers (so so many of these), and lions. I also own a lot of picture books starring rabbits; I'd say I have more books with rabbits than any other animal.

The library was disposing of several books by Monique Felix and I snatched them up.


I do adore Marjolein Bastin's Vera books, and Jane Pinkney did illustrations for The Mice of Nibbling Village.

I'm amazed that only 5 people on LT have a copy of The House that Mouse Built. Go look at Maggie Rudy's webpages and fall in love. I see she has a second book out!

I was going to suggest Kevin Henkes in general, although I particularly like Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, Wemberly Worried and Chester's Way. Those are probably my favorite mice.

We also like Library Mouse and the sequels quite a bit.

A Tale of Two Bad Mice!! for some reason that's the only Beatrix Potter either of my kids ever really liked....

And at Christmas time, we love Santa Mouse.

There is also The Biggest Pumpkin Ever. Some of the entries in that series are over-contrived but this one is cute.

... and I see that the book aunt page got most of those :)

How could I forget The Dark at the Top of the Stairs by Sam McBratney!

Little Elliot, Big City and Little Elliot, Big Family by Mike Curato both contain the cutest kidlit mice!

I also own Jerry Pinkney's wordless take on Aesop's The Lion & the Mouse, though I don't particularly like the illustrations.

Edit: The Tailor of Gloucester is a fantastic little book about mice! One of my favorites. Can't believe I forgot about it.

I recently found another copy of A Mouse in the House, and I still don't have possession of it. My first copy mysteriously disappeared when first daughter moved out. This time I was in Pittsburgh visiting my sister. She has a whole collection of the look and see kind of books and two toddler grandchildren. I let her keep it temporarily so that they could enjoy it thoroughly.

These are photos, and each double spread is filled with STUFF, and somewhere on the page, Henrietta is hiding in plain sight. As you follow her inky footprints or the path of destruction, you will notice the multitude of mouse motifs on the objects surrounding her.

Too cute for words!

Though not as cool as the mice that Maggie Rudy creates, Karina Schaapman creates her mice from knit fabrics. But her Mouse Mansion is AWESOME!

If you love Jill Barklem's interiors, this book is for you. Karina has created the same kind of warren of haphazard rooms in three dimensions with real objects. My favorite page is Grandpa the Sailor's front porch.

John S. Goodall had a number of wonderful illustrated stories of mice, some wordless, some not. Also, there's Anatole and its sequels by Eve Titus (oldie but goodie) and Commonplace Mouse by Karima Cammell.

I noticed an unclaimed picture book on a library shelf behind the desk today. As I used to work here, sometimes I can get special privileges.

A Visitor for Bear by Bonny Becker, illustrated by Kady MacDonald Denton is a lovable read. Grumpy Bear has a No Visitors sign on his front door. But he is besieged by a cute little visitor who is small, gray and bright-eyed. Adorable.

The sister I mentioned in >9 2wonderY: called me last night. She asked which address she should use to mail my book back to me. She wasn't going to tell me, but she finally admitted she has found Henrietta's sequel, A Country Mouse in the Town House.

I'm so excited!

My daughter just stumbled over Jill Barklem's obituary and notified me. Jill died last month at age 66.

Her Brambly Hedge books have been longtime favorites for my daughters and me. At some point, 2 inch statues were sold and we have a collection of those we've played with, making woodland dioramas. I've named my property in Kentucky in honor of those illustrations - Brambly Ridge. And I make a blackberry cordial that would be worthy of acclaim at the winter ball.

That mouse house is wild!

I remember Mouse soup and Mouse tales by Arnold Lobel.

Mouse Mess is visually stunning. It is because the blocks of color are so distinct and the page composition is elegant.

Riley's technique is labor intensive. Each part is cut from card and then watercolor depth is added by sponge before being assembled onto the black background. Mouse himself is a composite of about a dozen pieces, and he is so graceful and appealing.



Riley also does poster calendars and gift cards.

Mmmm. I got sucked in and ordered one of her 2020 calendars.

It's now almost de rigueur to gift new babies with a book at the baby shower or at birth. At my last grandbaby's shower, I discovered that my sister and I agree on which book. I just bought it again for my best friend's first grandchild.
