Other reviewers are right, the standout is really "Ritualising My Humanity" by J A Micheline, which comes almost at the end of the book. About half of the essays are five-star worthy, and most of the rest were very good.

This is by far the best, most varied, least prescriptive*, and most interesting witchy book I've read so far.

* (that one essay notwithstanding, lol.)

The through line of this book is the use of rituals: to take back control in a world that often strips people of their agency, to empower oneself against systems that rob people - especially marginalized people - of their power. While the level of 'witchyness' varies, the rituals remain. The authors themselves are a broad range of marginalized (and often intersecting) identities. It is fascinating to see the ways in which rituals and spells play a part in their very different lives. Another fascination is the often-contradictory sentiments expressed between essays. I’ve had this book for a couple years as it was one of the first things I ever helped crowdfund on Kickstarter, yet I listened to the audiobook from the library as lately sometimes the words need hearing. Some of the essays in this collection are difficult to read with much visceral pain; others bring art and nature to life through their imagery. All told it’s a beautiful read.

This book was a powerful read. It's about ritual, and the magic and we create and find in so many things... in the ocean and landscape, in obsession, in fashion, in video games. It's thinky and important.
