A rich story of friendships bound by a special place.

very disappointed in most of this book even though i did want to know what happened to many of the characters. there were also many statements that provoked thoughts, but most of the characters were such spokespeople for causes they were cartoonish. And the coincidences were definitely unbelievable!

Spanning decades, this novel is the story of the friendship between two women, Polly and Agnes. Through the ebb & flow of life’s biggest moments and smallest daily routines, we see as the friends lean on each other and deal with the realities of aging & exploring the idea of who really knows us. Set on the coast of Maine, nothing much seems to happen, but all of life is packed in this book.

SPOILERS
I do feel like quite a bit could have been edited out. I was also disappointed by an unbelievable twist (Heidi’s identity) at the end.

SPOILERS OVER

I think this is a story that will stick with me and it reminded me of Crossing to Safety. I also love that the author created very complicated women who are not just one simple thing.

“Polly thought the lack of concern for her appearance helped Agnus be certain in other ways. Prettiness is a distraction for everyone.”

“Death isn’t the end of love.”

This book was different than what I was expecting, it moves a little slow in parts but I stuck with it. I did become interested in the characters and am glad I stuck with it. I did like how things came together. Not a lot of action in the book, some very thought provoking passages, and a few places that should have had some editing.
