Vintage 1940's children story with elves, snowmen and kids roaming through the countryside on an adventure. The book includes puzzles and origami, the latter of which the author was especially fond. The annuals written and illustrated by Bestall are by far the most enjoyable in Rupert Bear stories and artwork.
A charming English story from the 1959-'60 era, set in rural England. Amusing to the under 6 audience; Alfred Bestall artwork is superb. The adventures are children, represented in a dressed-animal motif (and leading ordinary human-style lives). Some magical aspects develop in these Rupert The Bear annuals, but the context is not overdone.
My copy of this book has been defaced in multiple ways which at least shows heavy usage. Damage can be summarised as:
- ripping off most of the spine;
- writing of name with a heavy hand and thick pencil
- shading in text around the contents
- painting with blue ink a chequered flag and star on the frontispiece page
- painting a big blue blob in ink on the title page and adding, in pencil, some stars, 8 of them
- tearing off the bottom corner of the title page
- finger marking the bottom edges of pages 10 and 11
- colouring in parts of the 'Rupert’s easy way to draw and paint' pages
- scrawling the word ‘rake' In blue ink on page 43
- drawing a square that looks like a coffin with a purple pencil on page 71
- treating it very roughly in general
- turning over the corners of some pages
- tearing pages 25/26; 95/96; 103/104; 113/114; 119/120
Researching through the book I find the name of two potential owners. One has filled in a name on the Rupert’s painting contest page. To emphasise the name it has also been written sideways down the page in blue ink and half heartedly and partially on page 123 alongside a scribbled cross, with a purple pencil. The rear endpapers, showing beautiful islands and a beautiful sea, have been defaced with a drawing of a door or another coffin, the word trumpet and the workings of a puzzle that deliver the answer Rupert:

Well done, dear children, you have taken much value away from the book. Your parents should be ashamed of themselves. Looking at the titles of some of stories in the book, 'Rupert asks a policeman' and 'Rupert is put in prison',I interpret this as advice to me and I will be going straight to the nearest police station if it's still there, highly unlikely these days, to ask for you and your parents if they are still alive to be arrested and sent to prison. I would like there to be a full judicial process to show that I have taken into account a story entitled ‘Rupert is wrongly blamed’. I will also report the author for the insensitivity and political incorrectness of ‘Rupert follows his coon chum', page 51 and ‘Rupert reaches Coon islands’, page 55. I can see why this edition was not printed as a facsimile.… (plus d'informations)

Anyway, this is one story from the 50's and one from the 60's. Based on these rupert is a lot more fantastical and interesting than i expected :) . It also uses a strange combination of picture, rhyme and text. They're good but a little bit longer than they need to be.
