That was surprisingly better than I expected it to be 😊

The first story by Michael Carroll is basically a Western with Dredd as sheriff in a border town run by a corrupt business family, with high explosive weapons, mutants and radioactive twisters.

The second story by Matt Smith sees Dredd battered and bloodied, running a gauntlet of violent perps in a locked-down Mega-Block, not dissimilar to the excellent Karl Urban Dredd movie.

The last story by Cavan Scott is a detective mystery, featuring a female Trump-alike trillionaire politician and Deadliner, a serial killer targeting journalists. Dredd is assisted by a Psi-Judge, who wasn't Anderson but could just as well have been. Sadly, this story was marred by a section of egregious fatphobia 😕 I know the Fattie subculture is canon from the comics, but it can be used sensitivity or abusively, and unfortunately Scott went with the latter, which is a shame.

All the Dredd characteristics are here, but as an inexperienced newbie on the Mega-City One skeds, Joe is not infallible and he has some learning to do. Overall, a fun romp with a bit more going on than steel-chinned police brutality.… (plus d'informations)

My first stop in the Star Wars Canon challenge! I’d say this is probably more of a 3.5 rather than a 4 star though. I wasn’t a big fan of it being set up like a script (although it did make for quick reading). I did however, enjoy getting to read a little more in-depth about the jedi training and the library (I’m a sucker for a book with library cameos I know), as well as getting to understand more of Dooku’s backstory. I’m hoping that since it’s already all written out that this will get adapted one day.… (plus d'informations)

I actually read the entire thing, but because there isn't a collected edition in the works since IDW is losing their Star Wars license to Dark Horse, I'm just using the first issue as a place holder for my review for the time being (it's almost funny, that this was originally supposed to be an original graphic novel that was then split into a 4 issue limited series, now possibly not to be recollected into it's original, intended format). This was an OK story, like most of the IDW offerings. They've all just been OK.

This volume centers on Ty Yorrick, a former Padawan now mercenary and monster hunter for hire. She's been one of the characters that I've found most interesting, as I'm always intrigued by the characters who are disillusioned with the Jedi and the Force. I'm glad that we were able to get a little more of her backstory here (we get to see some of her time as a Padawan, and a definitive event in what made her leave the order), and I'm hoping that we'll be able to see more of her in the future. The rest of the story here is fairly straight forward - Yorrick is hired to hunt down a mysterious monster that is terrorizing a settlement, but of course, nothing is as it seems, and the Monster of Temple Peak may not be who they think it is. I thoroughly enjoyed Rachael Stott's art in the series; I'd definitely like to see more of her work on Star Wars series in the future.

Unless you are a completist like me with Star Wars, you won't be missing anything from the main, overall story arc of the High Republic, but this was still a fun little side adventure.… (plus d'informations)
