What will Rebecca Stead be doing now that she's JUST been awarded the Newbery Medal for her fantastic novel When You Reach Me? She's coming to Wellesley! Meet this lovely, charming, AWARD-WINNING author on Tuesday, February 9th at 6 PM at the Wellesley Free Library, and discover why we've been recommending ... (plus d'information)When You Reach Me to every reader within earshot. A mystery, a tale of time travel, a story about growing up, and an homage to the classic novel A Wrinkle in Time, When You Reach Me follows Miranda, a 6th grader in New York City in the late 1970s. Miranda's life is normal (if you call having your best friend ignore you and your mom training to be on a game show "normal"). Then Miranda receives a note that changes her life forever. It reads: I am coming to save your friend's life, and my own. I must ask two favors. First you must write me a letter. Like her heroine, Rebecca Stead grew up in New York City, where she was lucky enough to attend the kind of elementary school where a person could sit on a windowsill, or even under a table, and read a book, and no one told you to come out and be serious.
