The main problem with this book is the author's misguided attempt to translate a very personal friendship into a story for mass consumption. Everyone has had a friendship or relationship that has moments in it that defy description; something that is so funny or personal that it only amuses those involved. Those moments can be summed up by, "You had to be there." I appreciate the attempt to capture a friendship that meant so much to the author, but it is not done in a manner that allows the reader to join in on the journey. We are left outside and as a result, we end up judging the behavior of these women instead of experiencing life with them. I wish that I enjoyed this book more. It's taken me this long to make the choice to NOT finish reading this book. It's sad, it's too close to own life story, and I just can't emotionally remove myself out of the story.Excellent writing, excellent characters, realistic situations and characters all add up to 4 stars. Tried a couple of times but just couldn't get into it.Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. I found the book to be a rather sad attempt at rationalizing why behaving badly privately & publicly is okay because earlier poor choices led to a pretty difficult start of adulthood. Both woman, without a doubt , carried heavy loads of past & present griefs. Their solution was to make it all about "me, me, me" which made for pretty depressing reading. The author's original plan to form this "Women on the Way" was a great opportunity for personal growth for everyone but it really ended up being nothing more than an opportunity for these 2 way "cooler" women to run down the remaining group members. Sad. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. A great book. It is a story of two unlikely women who become close friends and struggle through ups and downs in the course of their lives. For any woman who has had a close girlfriend, this book is a MUST READ! It will leave you captivated, sad, happy, reaching for your phone to call your girlfriends, just to say "Hi".
A lively, pull-no-punches storyteller, Beck writes with great affection even as she struggles to create a fully realized portrait of Denise, who remains elusive. Though often full of treacle, Beck doesn't shy away from a frank, honest portrayal.
I didn't know that people come into our lives, and sometimes, if we're terribly lucky, we get the chance to love them, that sometimes they stay, that sometimes you can, truly, depend on them. Cathie Beck was in her late thirties and finally able to exhale after a lifetime of just trying to get by. A teenage mother harboring vivid memories of her own hardscrabble childhood, Cathie had spent years doing whatever it took to give her children the stability--or at least the illusion of it--that she'd never had. More than that, through sheer will and determination, she had educated them and herself too. With her kids in college, Cathie was at last ready to have some fun. The only problem was that she had no idea how to do it and no friends to do it with. So she put an ad in the paper for a made-up women's group: WOW . . . Women on the Way. Eight women showed up that first night, and out of that group a friendship formed, one of those meteoric, passionate, stand-by-you friendships that come around once in a lifetime and change you forever . . . if you're lucky.
