I understand the story needs to keep moving at an enjoyable pace and it didn't ruin my enjoyment. Luckily Weir's writing style is easy to digest and injected with plenty of humour. I'm excited to see how they adapt this story (and Rocky!) to the big screen one day. You are in a room with your body attached to tubes. You don't know where you are, or who you are - and the reader is just as unaware of the situation. You fall off the bed, pull out the tubes, and scramble to get away from the mechanical arms that reach out to grab you. Are you a victim of an alien invasion? Is your body a science experiment gone wrong? The reader wants to help you out, watches as you evade capture. And that is the beginning of Project Hail Mary. The story gets better; an onion is unpeeling as we discover along with you as your memory slowly comes back. Earth's sun is being "eaten" by alien amoeba, and you are a junior high school science teacher who has been sent to save the world. You aren't the first to be selected, but, a scientific paper that you wrote (scorned by some as improbable and most likely impossible) years ago plus your ability to withstand the rigors on your body of a necessary coma has brought you back to your chosen field. You are a perfect candidate for team membership for space adventure. You are no hero, did not ask to be sent on this suicide mission - a one-way ticket - you were forced to go on this trip due to things beyond your control - you were now to be a part of the team. After investigating, you realized you are alone as the others on the team did not make it past the induced coma; you have to remember who you are in order to complete your mission. As a reader, who knows nothing about science or the complexities of math, I was brought along on your journey. The friendship you made with an alien being who is also on a mission to save his planet was a fun element. Your story was an easy one to follow, your success had me cheering you on, your failures had my heart racing. There was a touch of humor, a touch of humanity, and definitely an unexpected loving friendship between man and alien. I loved your story, and would say that I was surprised how much I hated it to end! But, the end had me smiling!!
