"P.R. Chandrasekhar, the celebrated professor of economics at Cambridge, is at a turning point. He has sacrificed his family for his career, but his conservative brand of economics is no longer in fashion, and yet again he has lost the Nobel Prize to a rival. His wife has left him for a free spirited West Coast psychiatrist and relocated to Boulder, Colorado. His son, a capitalist guru with a cult following, mocks his father's life work; his middle daughter, the apple of his eye, has become a Marxist and refuses to speak to him; and his youngest daughter is struggling through her teenage years with the help of psychedelic drugs. And then, the final indignity: He is hit by a bicycle and forced to confront his mortality. Professor Chandra's American doctor instructs him to change his workaholic ways and "follow his bliss"--and so he does, right to the coast of California, and into the heart of his dysfunctional family. Witty, charming, and all too human, Professor Chandra's path to enlightenment will enchant and uplift readers from all walks of life"--… (plus d'informations)

It's no surprise that we often repeat the mistakes with our children our parents made with us. Professor Chandra is no exception. Working as an academic in the field of economics he is a snob, but acutely sensitive. He doesn't understand why his wife asked for a divorce, or why his 3 children have little to do with him.

It's not until he gets hit by a bicyclist and suffers a heart-attack that he is pushed to take stock of his life. And remember how his father hurt him physically and mentally, how he continued that legacy with his children especially with his son, Sunil. How he chose to give his work more time and attention than his family. He thought he needed the accolades of fame and financial success but now he realizes what's more important.

A good, sad and also fun read about self-discovery at the age of 70. How life changes can make a big difference in our outlook and relationships.

Professor Chandra, an economist of the Chicago school, faces up to his choices and his family. It's often funny, and I felt for the main character, his ex-wife and their children, but the resolution is a little too easily come by. ( )

This book was uneven. I was ready to quit until I got to chapter 5. Family dynamics.... ( )

While the summary seemed interesting the story failed to engage. Characters are mediocre, plot is predictable and dialog repetitive. I'd hoped for more but after reading nearly half it wasn't going anywhere. DNF! ( )

What a delight to read this novel after some seriously dark thrillers lately! Will recommend to fans of UpLit, which is fiction that can cover some serious personal and family issues, but ultimately leaves one hopeful. We need more like this! ( )
