San Francisco, 1948. Frank Swiver, down-and-out private eye, with a taste for wine and a weakness for women, accepts an invitation from General Thursby to attend a wine tasting aboard the general's private railroad car. Frank, accompanied by his secretary and lover, Vera Peregrino, finds an old flame, the recently widowed, Cicilai O'Callaghan, chef-owner of Chez Cici, among the guests at the tasting. Thursby wants Frank to find the murderer of his friend, the late Rusty O'Callaghan, whose death from a poison mushroom omelet the cops wrote off as accidental. But Thursby takes two slugs through the pump before the tasting has even begun. Locked into the private carriage until they reach their destination, the guests proceed to pull some corks, and tensions rise as they theorize who among them could be the killer. The cops arrest Vera for Thursby's murder, and while she languishes in her cell, Frank's renewed affair with Cici heats up. He spends his nights with Cici and his days questioning the guests from the tasting to find Thursby's killer and spring Vera. But another murder follows, and Frank soon sees that his romance with Cici is poisonous. He realizes he must either change his perceptions or lose both women, and maybe even his life.… (plus d'informations)

It was a fun read. The plot itself was intriguing and relatively well paced. Even the solution made sense. I'm not entirely sure the ending did though but it didn't ruin the book.

So why only three stars? I love the old noir classics-"Maltese Falcone", "The Thin Man", etc- and at times the author was just plain trying TOO HARD to get feeling. It came out as not natural. It was basically laying it on waaaaay too thick in places and it took me out of the narrative a bit. ( )

I give this book three stars because I did enjoy it overall. It was fast paced and had enough intrigue to keep me reading. I will say that I didn't rate it higher because it is laden with cliches and misogyny (although I understand that is just to make it feel realistic for the time period in which it is set). Good for a fun, quick read, especially if you're into murder mysteries. I recommend it as a beach read! ( )

If you love wine and you love murder mysteries, then this book will give you double the pleasure. It is most definitely a period piece so this review is also a shout-out to all reading fans who may appreciate a story that for me is an "Agatha Christie meets Dashiell Hammett" kind of read with its wonderful blending of closed room murder mystery (murder occurring on a moving train in a locked carriage car) with a decidedly hard-boiled detective edge and feel filled with "classy dames", big cars, hard-nosed cops and a down on his luck PI still holding a torch for his old flame, one of the suspects in the murder he is investigating. While I don't read hard-boiled detective novels, I do have a love for everything from Casablanca to any movie staring Humphrey Bogart so I can say that this story easily projected like a movie playing through my mind as I was reading it. The mystery is tight with some unexpected twists and turns. Even though I was able to predict the "who-done-it" rather early on, I like how Mazuk gives us a last minute rollar coaster ride before closing off the story.

A worthy mystery read and I will be keeping this author in my sights for further stories to read. ( )

Frank became a pacifist after fighting in the Spanish civil war and after WWII becomes a private detective with a penchant for wine and women. He is invited to a wine tasting event to use his services but dramatic events mean he is needed sooner than he thought.

This book is a fun read in the style of classic Dashiell Hammet with lots of red herrings to draw the reader in. Why is the wine from one vineyard not always up to its usual standard? How will Frank react when he meets up with his ex-love from several years ago? These are just two of the plot lines woven in with the main story.

This book is pure escapism and isn't too taxing for the reader. I look forward to reading more by the author.

I received this book for free from Library thing early reviewers. ( )

Early Reviewer Book. PI tries to solve the murder of a man on a train when his assistant is arrested for the murder. The plot was good and the wines sounded interesting. Book was easy to read and kept my attention for the most part. This is written like and old detective novel in keeping with "The Maltese Falcon". The phrases and words sound like a Humphrey Bogart movie. ( )
