It was a great read, rooted for both sisters, got a little teary-eyed, and loved the depth of all the characters and the storyline. ( ) This was one of the most predictable and boring books I've ever read. Admittedly, I am already biased against WWII romantic fiction. But why did Hannah feel the need to add the romance to Isabelle's story at all (especially if she's allegedly based on a real war heroine with no such romance)? Why did Hannah seemingly do no research and only know approximately 5 French words? Why did the audiobook reader decide to read every French character with a French accent when they are supposedly speaking in French (and not broken/accented English) in the first place? These questions are not even worth answering. I could not wait to finish this book so I could forget that I read it. 'The Nightingale' was the first recommendation I got from someone whose taste in books I don't know, so I was intrigued to see what I made of it. The story follows two estranged French sisters through the horrors of the Second World War. They both resist the Nazis in their different ways and suffer for it. Given the setting, there is a great deal of danger, tension, and suspense, which is sustained effectively. The characterisation of the sisters initially seems superficial, but becomes a bit more nuanced as the narrative proceeds. Hannah depicts the cruelties large and small in occupied France. That said, I found 'The Nightingale' lacking in subtlety when compared with something like [b:The Eighth Life|41071389|The Eighth Life|Nino Haratischwili|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1541145402l/41071389._SY75_.jpg|42466516]. It also seems transparently emotionally manipulative. The framing mechanism did make me cry at the end, but I was already feeling weepy for unrelated reasons so got slightly annoyed about this. Although the family tragedies moved me, Isabelle's romance did not as it was sweeping to the point of being unconvincing. Vianne's ugly compromises and domestic troubles are more insightfully written, in my view. Although there are some very good scenes, overall I do not think 'The Nightingale' lived up to other novels I've read about the same period. There is something a bit broad and melodramatic about it that wasn't to my taste. Moreover, I'd have preferred it to be more convincingly French.
