I have a couple of holistic health books but they seem a bit lightweight in content. Any suggestions?

I only have one, called Whole Health for Happy Cats and I unfortunately I haven't read it yet, so I can't make a recommendation.

Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health For Dogs and Cats seems to be the classic - and is highly recommended by my pets' holistic vet.

I had despaired of ever receiving a reply! I think I need to get Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats.

Glad I could help! It's pretty readily available, and in paperback, so not too expensive. Good
luck! It's become so much more complicated to keep our furry ones healthy now that we know so much more about what NOT to do!

Hi,
I'm still here! Still bringing my pets to a wonderful holistic vet - and trying to feed only the high quality foods that she so vehemently recommends. Unfortunately, my cats way prefer their old junk food - and I'm getting very tired of throwing out cat food that cost $1.00 for a 3 oz. can.

Oh good! I thought for a sec I was alone! I think no one besides you and me are the only things left of this group... oh well! What should we talk about?

Yeah, my cat is overweight, but she is around 15 years old in cat years, so we don't worry much about it. She also has arthritis and cancer... she;s hanging on there!

A little off-topic,but I did recently read a book that I really enjoyed about the bond between a woman recovering from a loss and an injured dog - it was called Lost and Found. I generally avoid books about dogs unless I know in advance that the dog doesn't die in the end.

Yeah, I know. I just brought it up thinking it might become a new discussion. Oh, that does sound sad. Yes, that seems sad... Good thinking!!

hi,

I just joined the group and wanted to say that holistic medicine for pets very much interests me. I have several cats and a dog. That book called Lost and Found sounds interesting. I will have to look for it, since I haven't heard of it before. Thanks for the suggestion.

It wasn't me who made the suggestion, but the one who did, I suppose it gone from Library Thing. I am a little confused about the holistic health of animals.... I feel stupid for saying so... but I have no idea what It is.. would someone explain? I would be interested in a discussion group for this though, and I am interested in learning about this subject.

I don't know how articulately I can describe this, but I have been bringing my pets to a holistic vet now for about 3 years. While she does have a degree in traditional veterinary medicine and will use it when it's the best solution to a problem, she relies much more heavily on holistic treatments, including acupuncture, the use of chinese herbs, natural remedies. One of her strongest beliefs is the damage that we do to our pets by feeding low quality foods - basically, she considers virtually any food sold in a grocery store to be low quality - she attributes rising cancer rates and the increase in other pet-related disease to these foods. For those who have the time and the inclination, she strongly advises cooking your pets' diets yourselves, relying on books like Dr Pitcairn's. Here;s a link to her thoughts on pet feeding practices:

There is an interesting book out now called "Whole Health for Happy Cats" by Sandy Arora. It is a very interesting book and tells you how to have a more holistic approach to raising your cat. A very interesting read.

Thank you for posting! I don't know many books like that because recently my cat passed away and I never had the time to read them.
