Child of God by Cormac McCarthy

Has anybody read it?

I found it more disturbing than more graphic books like Exquisite Corpse or American Psycho by the fact that McCarthy makes Ballard such a sympathetic character.

The other two are comic books (assuming you mean the EC of "Poppy Z. Brite"). Child of God, along with The Outer Dark, Blood Meridian and Sadeq Hedayat's The Blind Owl are among my favorite very disturbing literary books.

I don't recall whether Ballard came across as a character we can sympathize with (though that might appeal to McCarthy's cynicism) or not, but certainly, McCarthy passes no judgement on him. A child of God is essentially an idiot - a degenerate, morally vacant wanderer in the outer dark (of our morally destitute world). And of course we are all God's children (manikins set in motion by an alien god?), as they used to say. McCarthy's Everyman, Lester Ballard.

You found him sympathetic? I found him pityful and tragic at best, evil at worst, and scary all the time, but not really sympathetic at any point. What are his sympathetic points in your opinion?
