So I read it a long time ago but here is the points that I remember:
At the beginning the boy MC wakes up at night in front of his burning house and he has no idea what happened.
As he runs to get away from his house he will come across what seems to be a unicorn in the woods.
A family friend will pick him up and take him to a safe place and reveal to him that he does not come from this world but from a parallel dimension and that there were two children who were saved from a genocide of this dimension and he is one of them...
Then I don't quite remember the plot but I know that the safe place where they go is a house between dimension and in this house there is an armory where there is a flame sword that can't be wielded but when there is an attack on the house the boy take the weapon and can wield it prouving that he isn't human but a dragon...
The reason they were dragon and unicorn in human form was to keep the hidden in the real world.
There is also a time where they go back to the fantasy dimension
and the villains are a snake/basillisc race ?(I'm really not sure about this detail at all)
If I remember well it's a series of book of at least 2 books.
I read it in 2010-2015, I don't remember quite well.
It was in the young/adolescent section of my library in France.
If I remember correctly the book was red but it may be a false memory.
It was quite the medium book, something like 300 to 400 pages but it could have been written big...
That's almost all that I remember, I searched this book for a long time and the fact that I can't seem to find it drives me crazy, so thank you in advance !!

In the house at the beginning, If I remember correctly the boy lives with his parents and the parents die in the fire.
In the Safe Place he is with the young girl and the "mentor" (and maybe another person).
I do remember that there is a second part/book where there is a scene where the boy who i older than the girl comes to pick her up at the end of her High School Classes?
