Jacqueline Carey D'Angeline novels

Starting with Kushiel's Dart. I think there's 9 novels so far. Did you read any of them? All of them? Are you a fan or not so much? I really enjoyed the first trilogy about Phedre. The second trilogy fell a little flat for me. The third trilogy, unrelated to the characters in the other books, was engaging and I enjoyed them but not as much as the Phedre novels.

Read the first, didn't feel drawn to any character enough to want to read the rest.

The only one I really enjoyed was Dart, but I'm looking forward to Cassiel's Servant when it comes out in August.

I looked at my notes from 20 years ago. I raved about Dart, then said I liked the other two in that trilogy, and then I lost interest & didn't read the further ones. Somehow it felt mined out to me, as I remember. I did read Santa Olivia, a science fiction set in a bleak future N America, and featuring genetically modified characters. It was a big switch from the Dart books, but it shared a dark tone, and I liked it also. But I haven't read the sequel to that, either.

I do want to try the Sundering duology.

>5 Cecrow: I found the Sundering very choppy and hard to follow. The writing style is definitely different from the D'Angeline novels. I came close to DNFing Godslayer.

>5 Cecrow: It can definitely be done really badly (ex. Gray, which I've been told just makes the title character look even worse and adds little), but done right it can really flesh something out. Portrait of a Wide Seas Islander is an alternate-perspective retelling of a pivotal scene from Hands of the Emperor, and adds context and really smacks home how the POV character from HotE views himself.

I expect Cassiel's Servant to be closer to the bad end though. :)

I read and enjoyed the first trilogy a lot. I was really stunned at the time that everyone only talked about it as a sex-themed series, but never acknowledged that between the sex bits, it was also a strong story with traditional epic fantasy narrative. But similar to rshart3, I haven't really pursued the other series. They're perpetually on my "I should get around to these eventually" list (which is a separate thing from my actual TBR).
