Travels with Charley in Search of America by John Steinbeck 2004

In 1960, John Steinbeck and his big black dog Charley set off to circumnavigate the continental United States from Maine to California in a light truck that was converted into a campervan. This delightful book takes us back over 60 years in time to when the USA was a very different place to today, with fewer people, uncrowded national parks, worse roads and far worse racial prejudices.

Steinbeck records his impressions of people, places, scenery and just his own thoughts as he meanders, sometimes quite aimlessly, around the country. He talks to petrol pump attendants, policemen, hitch-hikers, bigots, long lost friends, truckies, members of a religious commune, farmers and everyone in between.

The 241 page book is introduced by Jay Parini for 19 pages, then Steinbeck launches into his travels by starting with the description of a hurricane hitting his Long Island home just before his departure. There are twelve detailed full-page drawings and innumerable delightful tailpieces by John Holder.

The binding is in black and silver image blocked blue cloth. The front mid-blue endpapers are printed in grey with an image, but the back endpapers are plain mid-blue. It is housed in a plain dark blue slipcase 24.8x16.9cm.

>1 wcarter: I love the design of this one, but when reading it always annoys me that with the paper they chose the type (& illustrations) clearly show through from the other side, which can be a distraction
