A Brief Guide to the Old Stile Press

As noted below in the topic header 'Sad News', the founder and proprietor of the Old Stile Press (OSP), Nicolas McDowell, died on July 31, 2021 and there will be no further OSP publications. His children Daniel and Cressida (Cress) will continue operations, fulfilling existing orders and handling new orders for the remaining inventory.

Over the past decade the OSP has become one of my favorite small private presses and I have collected many of their publications. Although many of their titles over the past four decades are long gone, a significant number of outstanding titles remain available. If you consider yourself a serious collector of modern private press books and do not own an OSP title, I heartily recommend adding one to your collection. As a guide for OSP newbies, I have listed what I consider the finest of the editions still available for purchase, in order of preference:

1. Green Blades by Thomas Hardy
2. The Diary of a Dead Officer by Arthur Graeme West
3. Equus by Peter Shaffer
4. The Third Thing by Ralph Kiggell
5. Trans-Siberian Prosody and Little Jeanne from France by Blaise Cendrars
6. The Affectionate Shepheard by Richard Barnfield

I only have two works by the OSP. Equus which I bought from the press after I read Dr. Carter's write up (as I've done so many other times). This is a very nicely done edition and very reasonably priced. My other OSP book, and one of my favorites in my entire library, is The Dream Song of Olaf Asteson. I'm not much impressed by the text but the production is great with wonderful thick wooden boards and fantastic hand colored prints.

I have four books on my Old Stile wishlist. Has anyone ordered from them since the next generation took over? I am curious as to how responsive they are, and if the books are well-packed for an overseas journey out of the UK.

>3 Shadekeep: Yes. Cress is responsive and wonderful. I would ask for extra care in packing though because I’d say the packaging is on the minimal side. She apparently has much more faith in the carriers and handlers than I would accord them.
