Psychological mystery. I read this book a few years ago and would like to recommend it. A very talented female artist is approached by a male friend who is looking for an artist for a wealthy well-known lady. The lady commissions the artist to do a mural on all the walls in a large ballroom in her home. This mural being extremely meaningful and important to the history of the home. The lady becomes very attached to this artist and wants her to become her close companion, traveling and living with her, inheriting her wealth upon her death as her health is not strong. Basically, it seems she wants the artist to replace her deceased daughter. The daughter’s death being not on the up and up. The artist eventually turns her down on this offer because she wants her own life. She completes the mural late one night and goes to see it the next morning with the natural light from the day. When she gets there the next say, she discovers that the mural has been whitewashed completely over. She is told by the housekeeper that the lady had stayed up most of the night whitewashing the mural obliterating all sign of it ever being there. The lady will not visit/see the artist that day feigning not feeling well. As the artist leaves, in much confusion and distress, she senses something and looks back and sees the lady through an upstairs window, laughing hesterically. This is how the book ends.
