A Lost Lady by Willa Cather 1983

I have just received an amazing find, a copy of Willa Cather's "A Lost Lady" still in its original shipping box, and unopened until received by the book seller from whom I purchased it. Evidently the book was part of a job lot of books, and the dealer opened it to find out what was in the box, then sealed it again.

The box is addressed to a Lorraine Zimmermann in Laguna Beach, CA.

It is obviously in pristine unread condition and a truly delightful book. Quarter-bound in maroon leather with clothsides printed with a floral design. A frontispiece etching and four other illustrations. Tissue protectors for frontispiece and limitation page. All page edges gilt. 103 pages in total.

I am rather pleased with this!

This is a great find and it is a wonderful book to read. I have a fine copy and the edition is so nice in every way.

Are you going to shelve it together with your copy of The Zimmerman Telegram?

Congratulations on a remarkable find, Warwick. I acquired and read a very nice copy just this week (and I agree with >2 Jan7Smith:'s opinion of it as a read). I have avoided LEC books up to now because of the cost of shipping to the UK, but weakened after enjoying the FS Death comes for the archbishop, and wishing to find more Willa Cather in a decent edition. The book was part of a batch of three LECs, to spread the shipping, and I'm pleased with them all. Another cash drain opened.

>1 wcarter: I've purchased only one LEC in the original packaging. In my case the packaging was much different. I t consisted of a box inside of a box inside of a box - almost like a matryoshka doll.

Very droll!

I have slowly accumulated 30 LEC titles, but had a rush in the last few weeks. Most have been very reasonably priced, but postage from USA to Australia often equals the price of the book.

Is the spine fading on this edition inevitable? I've seen several listings but all mention fading. On a side note, it's interesting that F. Scott Fitzgerald based The Great Gatsby on A Lost Lady.

>9 wcarter: a very fine copy indeed! It will be hard though not impossible to find one in that condition.
