1. Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe - Laurence Bergreen
Read primarily over Christmas; this was an excellent, detailed and v.readable account of a voyage that was groundbreaking in many ways, with life threatening situations never seemingly far off. Lots of stuff I didn't previously know about i.e the Treasure Ships of China and their Maritime history. Recommended.
2.Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets by Nassim Nicholas Taleb -L - Good if challenging at times read with it's main pretext relevant in all forms of life - especially when reading exagerrated Media headlines regarding statistics - e.g. 2 sausages a day is the same as 20 cigarettes sort of nonsense. Your man Taleb does love himself somewhat. A lot of the book does also cover the same theme from various angles, but ultimately made me think and analyse things from a far more objective perspective in future. For that alone it's worth reading.
3. Hasty for the Dark: Selected Horrors by Adam Nevill -k A big Adam Nevill fan; but this, his second collection of short stories didn't always rock my boat. I'd read a few in other places and due to the age of these, some themes had been explored in his novels. Opener was good with shades of 'No-one gets out alive' but the others were fairly average. His language has always managed to conjure up great feelings of dread putting you in the role of the protagonist, but didn't feel that happening here. Some Will Not Sleep: Selected Horrors was far superior in my view.

Readable; in fact read it pretty much solidly within 24h, but not what I was expecting. Thought it would be more from a sociological perspective rather than an autobiographical one. Strange the plaudits it received.
