More than a quarter of Merthyr Tydfil’s residents claim incapacity benefits. A third of its children leave school with no qualifications. A tenth of its patients are prescribed antidepressants. Nearly three-fifths of its population are overweight or obese. This may not sound like ideal material from which to fashion an amusing book, but somehow Tim Moore manages it. Moore has made a career out of writing quirky travelogues: in Do Not Pass Go, for example, he visited all the streets mentioned on the original Monopoly board, and in Spanish Steps he trekked across Spain with a donkey. Now, in You Are Awful (But I Like You), he tours what he calls “unloved Britain”, stopping off at our most miserable towns, gasping at our most hideous architecture, shivering in our worst-reviewed hotels and forcing down our most disgusting delicacies.
Would you cheer if they sent you to Coventry? Could you stick up for Stoke or big-up Bracknell? Can you handle the thrill of Rhyl, the heaven of Hull or the mirth of Tydfil? In You are Awful, Tim Moore drives his Austin Maestro round all the places on our beloved island that nobody wants to go to - our most miserable towns, shonkiest hotels, scariest pubs, and silliest sea zoos... But as the soggy, decrepit quest unfolds he finds himself oddly smitten, and the result is a rousing, nostalgic celebration of mad, bad But I Like You Britain. He takes himself on a tour of some of the worst parts of Britain, in one of the worst cars made, an Austin Maestro, with the worst 358 songs as his sound track. It takes him up the east of the country around Scotland and back down the west side and into Wales. He stays at the hotels and guest houses that have only just managed to score a single star.
And yet through all this he still finds things and places that he likes. Very funny, his wit (read sarcasm) is excellent, but the depths that some of these parts of the country have got to is despairing. (
