Alexander Sodenburg

Listening to this book confirmed my belief that the international dealers in drugs have more of a handle on world events and how to manage them than the lower level police forces.

The plain ordinariness of the nurse Sophia’s meeting and subsequent friendship with international crime boss Hector is believable as is his underlying decency despite the sinister role life has handed him. Also believable is the cynical attitude the police take to the law and the society who created the law.

Nurse becomes involved in attempted rub out of Hector bringing into the story a police quasi official unit headed by Gwenilla who recruits into her unit a prescription drug addict Lars, two hood like characters who are not adverse to committing murder in repayment to their boss for rescuing them from their airport security purgatory along with incompetent Anders and his accomplice who are tied to Gwenilla by a past crime.

The brings into focus a gang war spanning continents. However the participants unlike the police have a code of conduct killing only when necessary, sending an opponent(not enemy) to medical treatment when he is hors combat in much the same way as would a soldier on a battlefield. This contrasts with the final meltdown of Gwenillas gang who engage in warfare upon each other as things begin to unravell,Gwenilla using police resources and clever PR to cover things up.

The finale introduces us to the higher level workings of the police where Gwenillas boss Tommy has to deal with the top brass. Things are arranged in such a way as to give the reader the impression that the action is an unavoidable disturbance in the age old process of evolution, the strong as usual still in charge the lesser minions eliminated in a Malthusian sequence of events confirming Spencer’s theory of social evolution working in concert with Darwin’s evolution of the species dissertation.

Hector escapes to his South American home to continue his role as book publisher come drug dealer to evolve into a different form feeding the West’s insatiable need for drugs ,sex, and rock and role and giving the uneasy feeling that yes indeed, this how things are
