LibraryThing showed Your Library collection (the books actually in our house) at 5423 at 9 am this morning. Since then I've gotten rid of three books. That should last another 10 minutes or so, until I add last week's acquistions. Sigh.

Today we are at 5586, so you can see this isn't working so far. Maybe in the fall when it's cooler I'll get more into purging.
I was able to develop a new strategy for purging other than donations, which are becoming increasingly difficult as the libraries in my area stop taking book donations. I now look a book up on LibraryThing and check the swap summary. If more copies are available than are wanted, I recycle the book rather than trying to find a home for it.

We're currently at 5,696, and when I talked about a purging binge to Tim earlier today, he turned up his nose. Doesn't look like we'll be getting rid of many this month. So we grew by over 200 books! Eck!
Well, at least it's under 6000. Maybe I'll make keeping it under 6000 my goal for next year.
