The book is based on the folktale of Mulan and the illustrations displays the culture of China. The book has a theme that woman can fight too. Another theme is the importance of family which is observed through how she sacrificed her life so her father wouldn't have to go to war. I would recommend this book and I think it would be a great book for 2nd and 3rd graders to read.

A beautifully illustrated retelling of the Chinese folktale Mulan, told simply and clearly: when Mulan's father is called to join the army, Mulan goes in his place. She is skillful and brave, but when she appears before the emperor, she turns down his appointment to the high court, saying her dearest wish is to return home to her family. Her army buddies are stunned ("How is it possible we did not know that our respected leader was a girl all along?"), to which Mulan responds, "One should not judge another by their appearance alone. When a pair of rabbits run side by side, can you tell the female from the male?"… (plus d'informations)

Chinese and English Nursery Rhymes presents forty vibrantly illustrated verses in both Chinese and English in a side-by-side format that encourages fun Mandarin Chinese language learning. This inspiring collection of favorite rhymes shows how the simple pleasures of childhood are universal across the globe.

Another way for kids to engage the Chinese/Mandarin language - via poetry! There is a lot of information on each page, but it is not overwhelming - kids can read it all or pick and choose as they go. The pieces of cultural information and the watercolor and ink illustrations enhance the words and tell a story on their own. Ultimately, I like it because kids with different interest and reading levels can engage this book in different ways, and grow with it.
