Biography of the man that was in charge of the "red cap" porters at Grand Central Terminal in New York City from shortly before the building opened until the end of World War II. Actually, the scope of the biography goes a little beyond that, in that it includes James William's son, Wesley, who was a prominent pathbreaker in the New York City Fire Department, as well as other figures of the "Harlem Renaissance" of the 1920s.
