MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Finding Family in a Far-Away Land: An Adoption Story by Amanda Wall is such a precious book written about the author’s experience adopting two daughters from India. The story is told with Priya, the oldest day and her point of view. Priya was old enough to remember their life in with their parents and then in the orphanage after they lost their parents, so we get a little of India’s culture mixed in as well.

I enjoyed this story very much. It was fun and interesting as the two cultures mixed and the issues with each side as they learned their new way of life. Author Amanda Wall does a very nice job writing and illustrating the story. The illustrations are a little bit different than a lot of children’s books, but yet they work well with telling the story. I love the front cover, I think it fits the story perfectly. This is a very well thought out and written book, and tells a story that needs to be in many families. I think it would be a good library book for schools as well. It would be an awesome resource when needing something to read to children who have been adopted, and because it is a true story I think I would be more meaningful. I highly recommend this sweet book and it is Four Stars for me.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

This book is absolutely adorable. I had a smile on my face from the first page to the last.

It is the story of two sisters, born in India, who are adopted into an American family. Priya, the older sister, describes her life with little sister Ari - from living in a hut with little food and water, losing their parents and being placed in an orphanage, to their new life in America with a new family. They are suddenly in a world they never knew existed and where everything is new to them. The cultural adaptations are at times humorous and at others eye-opening (like when Ari sees a leopard in the zoo). Priya and Ari did not speak English so just smiled a lot. But sometimes words are not needed, like when their new mother strokes their hair and kisses them. In the end, it is a beautiful story of what it means to be a family. But it also acknowledges that India will always be a part of Priya and Ari, and I love that their new family allows the Indian culture to be a part of their family’s life.

The illustrations are beautiful watercolors which made the story come to life.

I highly recommend this book if you have adopted children or know families with adopted children. It may even cause you to consider expanding your family.

What a delightfully candid, informative, and edifying book! Finding Family in a Far-Away Land is narrated by young Priya and tells the story about her and her little sister’s lives before and after meeting their adopted family and moving from India.

I love children’s stories that not only entertain but also teach young readers something new about themselves or the world around them. In this story, readers learn about some customs and ways of life in India and perhaps how starkly different Priya’s experiences are from their own. I mean, what readers encounter a leopard entering their neighborhood, have no bed of their own, or or have so little food they dream of eating rice?

I highly encourage you to investigate this enlightening adoption story book. It was a pleasure meeting Priya and her sister Ari and learning about the incredible growth in their lives since becoming part of a new family.

Finding Family in a Far Away Land is a simply written, heartfelt story, of a couple of orphaned girls in India who receive a family from America, full of love. Their feelings and a few experiences are shared. It also points out the opposites in their two living conditions.
This is a wonderful story for young children. It is a wonderful book for Summer Reading Programs and Book Clubs.
The illustrations are cartoon-like in colorful watercolors. These are also created by the author.
The only negative comment I have is it lacked telling by what means the two girls were orphaned.

*This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.
