I guess it was a good introduction to the series. My main disappointment was that, although there were several characters introduced. very little background was provided on them. I felt no connection to the characters because the this absence of background. The writing was also quite juvenile.

Lots of action but also some weird dialogue

The series got better with each book. There was lots of non-stop action. Two problems I have with the series. 1. we got very little background on the main characters so it was difficult to feel any sympathy or any other emotion towards their plight. 2. The dialogue was often weird, characters going into contemplation right in the middle of battle. How is that possible? You're brain can be deep in thought when you are struggling to survive. completed chapter one - seems to have a naive positivity about how life works that isn't so much refreshing as upsettingly simplistic.
