Revels, 1827-1901 A Biography by Julius Eric Thompson (read 14 Oct 2016) This is a plainly-written biography published in 1982 of the first Black U.S. Senator, who served in the Senate from Feb 1870 to Mar 3, 1871. It appears to cover as fully as possible what can be leaned of Revels' life. He was born in North Carolina to free parents and only came to Mississippi in 1868. The attempt to block his being seated because he had not been a U. S. citizen for nine years (a constitutional requirement) failed because he had lived in Ohio and voted there more than 20 years before.
