This book has the most beautiful and intricate pop-ups and therein lies the problem - who on earth is this book, and others like it, actually aimed at? It only appeals to two sorts of people: very young children and adults, both of whom like it more for the fun of the pop-ups and the bright primary colours that imply fun and happiness. But the children who are young enough to like it will destroy it, will pull the pop-ups too hard to see how they work or just because they like the sound of paper ripping. So why do the adults pay out for these books? I don't know the answer to that, except to say that the sensible ones seeing it in my bookshop say, 'oh I'd never get him that, he'd destroy it in two minutes'.
