This book wasn't for me. I don't like cheating books, at all, no exceptions. The book starts with the woman living in Ireland and we learn that her husband(Daniel) is dead. The book is then written as though writing memoirs, recalling how we get to this point.
The issue i had is that she is married when she meets Daniel and cheats on her husband before leaving him. Poor Henry is a lovely guy and she treats him badly.. After Daniel dies she discovers things about him that shake the whole basis on their relationship. The only thing is i suppose is there is justice in what she finds and she pays somewhat for the cheating, that said i don't like the theme.

A gripping tale but rather lewd in places with a great tragedy at the end. Not for the faint hearted.½

Finding an absent father and the rest of his family leads Francey to the disfunctional world of his half-brother and his mysterious wife. Thank goodness for Francey's female friend who keeps him closer to reality.

Not the sort of book I normally read, but I got to the end, and what an ending!! I didn't see that coming at all, which probably makes me incredibly thick.

Angela Devine has taken care of her brother James since their mother died when James was only 2 months old and Angela was 17. After surviving years of grinding poverty and loving James as if he were her own child, Angela's world comes crashing down. James is 19 and is accused of rape.
This is a tragic Irish story told with love and humour.½

I loved this tangled human drama from Irish writer Deirdre Purcell. Ms Purcell's presence in the North American market is not significant yet but she is a very popular Irish writer and this is her 10th novel. A young woman is imprisoned in 1944 by her parents for promiscuity and tragically she spends 35 years locked in her bedroom. This is not that unbelievable considering the tragic fate of many pregnant or by the standards of the day, promiscuous, unmarried girls in Ireland who were sent to the Magdalene institutions run by the Catholic church. The terrible abuse of these women has been the subject of several books and at least one movie. This practice continued into the 1970s.
While the book reads like a thriller, this is also a wonderful love story and of the ties that bind family.
Highly recommended.
